- ➤ Nurses from Las Palmas Medical Center and Providence Memorial Hospital are holding vigils tonight at 8 p.m. at the hospital (corner of N. Oregon St. and E. Hague) to honor Alex Pretti, an RN fatally shot in Minneapolis by a federal officer. KFOX14
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Texas Zoo will host Eat Your Ex on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2026, from 10am to 4pm, letting participants name a roach or stinky fish after an ex to be fed to an animal either in person or virtually; Black Bear feedings are (noon to 1pm). KLAQ
- ➤ El Paso is hosting a series of Black History Month events in February that honor the city’s longtime Black legacy with art exhibitions, gala ceremonies, community tours and cultural celebrations at local venues from Feb. 1 to Feb. 21 + some events are free. El Paso Matters
- ➤ L.A. comedian Leo Gonzalez will perform at Bart Reed's Comic Strip Nightclub on April 24 and 25 + he will deliver two shows each night at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., with tickets priced from $28.50 to $49.50. KFOX14
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University Medical Center is gifting $1.5 million to UTEP to hire new faculty for its nursing and occupational therapy programs, which will expand class sizes to meet local health care needs + the university expects its nursing program to graduate over 400 students yearly by 2028. KVIA
- ➤ The Ysleta ISD Board of Trustees approved longtime Superintendent Xavier De La Torre's annual evaluation on Wednesday, commending his leadership as the district confronts budget and enrollment challenges. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Officials confirmed that TxDOT crews are relocating and connecting a sewer line (expected to finish early February) at the intersection of Artcraft and Upper Valley; the work is part of the larger Artcraft project that will improve traffic along Interstate 10 to the state line and run until 2030. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Texas Tech Health El Paso launches a new orthopedic surgery residency program to expand musculoskeletal care and train future surgeons. The program, announced today, will begin soon — strengthening local healthcare and offering advanced training opportunities. El Paso Inc.

- ➤ Michelin-star chefs opened Kala Baja Med, a Baja Mediterranean restaurant following a Thursday ribbon-cutting at 7470 Cimarron Market Ave, Building 5, Suite 100; it now offers dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. today. KFOX14
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On Jan. 27, a halftime celebration in El Paso honored the Eastwood Troopers, the last UIL state champion in basketball from this area. The team, led by coach Bob Lesley in 1976 to a 31 to 3 record (a rare local feat), was remembered for its unity and achievement. El Paso Times
