  • We Hike is hosting a free teen hiking program today at Franklin Mountains State Park with check in at 7:30 a.m. where over 30 teens will join a 3-mile trail hike to learn safety, leadership & Leave No Trace guidelines.  KVIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • 12 year old Arykah Brown earned recognition from the Recording Academy for background vocals on the Grammy winning album 'Brillo, Brillo' by Lucky Diaz & the Family Jam Band. The Spec. Rafael Hernando III Middle School student, active in Fine Arts, now proudly displays her Grammy certificate at home.  KVIA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy shows gas will be cheapest in 2026 with an average of $2.97, though prices will rise in 3 to 5 weeks due to spring demand (a sign of near-term increase). El Paso residents now spend $40–$70 per fill and hope lower costs will ease daily travel.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTEP's Miner Cybersecurity Clinic (funded by Google) completed training for its first nine students on Friday, Jan. 30 and now offers free cybersecurity services to local organizations in El Paso. The clinic plans to train over 100 students and assist 30 groups by 2030.  KFOX14
  • Texas schools must restrict students’ personal cellphone use as part of a new statewide policy effective at the start of the 2025-2026 school year. Socorro Independent School District reported 21 infractions among nearly 46,000 students, though some parents worry about communication during emergencies.  KFOX14
  • On Jan. 30, the Ysleta ISD Board approved Superintendent Xavier De La Torre's annual evaluation after a closed-door session, praising his leadership amid budget challenges and declining enrollment while he postponed a salary raise until the district improves (he earns over $451K a year).  El Paso Times
  • Education savings accounts will open for individual enrollment this coming week after Texas lawmakers passed funding for school vouchers, backed by Governor Abbott. Host Andrew J. Polk will explain the program details with Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock on Sunday at 10:35 p.m. after ABC-7.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After heavy rains, a resident’s vehicle was damaged by a pothole on Resler Drive and his damage claim was denied by the city because of state immunity under Texas law. City Attorney Karla Nieman said affected drivers may appeal the decision to the city council.  KFOX14

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Redfin Real Estate data from December show that buying a typical home in El Paso requires a 35.5% higher income premium than renting, with buyers needing $81,037 versus $59,827 for renters. The figures highlight local affordability challenges compared to national averages (46.3% premium nationally).  KVIA
