BUSINESS NEWS

  • Attorney Daniela Labinoti explained that slip and fall cases depend on visitor status—customers visiting for business reasons are owed a higher duty of care than those entering for personal reasons. Labinoti noted that businesses in El Paso must keep their premises safe to avoid liability.  KFOX14

CRIME NEWS

  • Chihuahua state police, assisted by the FBI and Juárez municipal police, rescued two El Paso teenagers who were held for about three days after being abducted at 9 p.m. on April 11 outside a restaurant—authorities arrested four suspects linked to the case.  El Paso Times
  • A 26-year-old East El Paso resident was arrested for cruelty to non-livestock animals after witnesses reported on April 1 that he dragged and kicked Goose—a brown boxer—on a leash, and he was taken into custody on April 11 when his bond was set at $10,000.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fans in El Paso and Corpus Christi remembered Selena Quintanilla on April 16 when she would have turned 54 by visiting her memorial sites; the Corpus Christi location features a life-size bronze statue while a mural near Old Sheepdog Brewery in El Paso shows her profile—both marking her lasting impact 30 years after her death.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso residents can join the NorthEaster Parade on Saturday, April 19 at 10 a.m.—its route begins at Diana Drive and Hercules Avenue and features local music, floats and shows. UTEP’s Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition runs on campus from April 16 until July 25 for free, and the Hike-A-Thon series kicks off at 7:30 a.m. on April 19 at Lost Dog Nature Preserve with guided walks for all skill levels.  El Paso Matters
  • The ninth annual 'Trash to Treasure' art contest is hosting its reception today as local artists transform recycled materials into creative works, and Michael Hernandez won first place. The contest received over 400 submissions narrowed to 240 entries, and winners in school categories will get cash awards of about $1300—supporting local projects like the Mountain Lion mural downtown.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Texas House will vote on Senate Bill 2— a bill that would create a $1 billion private school voucher program to give families over $10,000 per student, with $11,500 for students with disabilities and $2,000 for homeschoolers. Gustavo Reveles warned the vouchers could shift taxpayer funds from public schools and lower education standards in El Paso.  KVIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Cardinal Health warehouse in El Paso released ethylene oxide—a cancer-causing chemical used to sterilize medical devices—that has raised concerns over exposure risks for nearby residents and workers. Research shows the lack of strict oversight means similar warehouses may be putting people at risk across the country.  El Paso Matters
