- ➤ National Youth Violence Prevention Week begins this week as the El Paso County Sheriff's Office reports an increase in assault incidents on school campuses, including a new prank called senior assassin where students use replica firearms that shoot plastic projectiles. - ➤ A collision happened Sunday at 10:40 p.m. on Sean Haggerty west and Gateway South in the Northeast—one person received treatment for non-life threatening injuries while a second was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, and although TxDOT reported all lanes reopened just before 2 a.m., police said they will remain closed until the investigation is finished. - ➤ El Paso school districts began planning their 2025-26 budgets as they await a decision from state lawmakers on increasing school funding—districts are weighing measures like school closures and higher health insurance premiums to manage looming deficits and declining enrollment. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A UTEP study found that undocumented immigrants in El Paso have a lower risk of crime than U.S. citizens, with fewer jail bookings and less serious charges as shown on April 17—researchers say policies like Operation Lone Star may be counterproductive—calling for review of current immigration practices. - ➤ El Paso City Council voted today to stop El Paso Electric from raising rates by including costs from the Texas Solar One facility — a 150 MW solar project near Fabens — which would add about $2.11 a month for residential customers. The utility will file an updated request after the facility starts, and the city along with other groups will review any future cost changes. KVIA
- ➤ Fort Bliss broke ground on April 22 on 4.3 miles of new rail track that can handle 565 rail cars and boost freight capacity by 40% to support rapid deployment of forces. The project, funded by the National Defense Authorization Act, will take at least two years — a culmination of decades of planning for improved military readiness. El Paso Times
