  • Cesar Alejandro Roa, 25, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after fatally shooting 16-year-old Jasmine Estrella Adame during a drug deal in a far East El Paso alleyway.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new downtown mural honors rapper Krystall Poppin and Mexican culture by showing her colorful denim jacket and the emblem of La Virgen de Guadalupe—created by local muralist Tino Ortega over three weeks in partnership with the city and Michelada Fest, which debuts today.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, El Paso voters will choose school board members for the Socorro and El Paso school districts during the May uniform election. In Socorro, four seats are on the ballot and trustees must pick a new superintendent after Dr. Carman was placed on leave and layoffs were made to manage a $38M budget gap—while EPISD voters decide on board seats amid plans to close eight elementary schools to address a $32.2M shortfall and falling enrollment.  KFOX14

  • Pellicano Drive expansion remains stalled after a bankruptcy ruling on J.A.R. Construction, and the city is hosting a cleanup today with large dumpsters available from 8 a.m. to noon for household items at several local sites. Other news includes a planned direct flight to Chihuahua for next summer, a change in asthma care by Blue Cross Blue Shield, EPCC approving a contract for an adult diploma program launching this fall, climate meetings scheduled for May 7 and May 14, and an immigration official replaced on May 1 amid legal challenges—moves that shape local government actions.  El Paso Matters

HEALTH NEWS

  • A severe dust storm will hit El Paso on Sunday, May 4 with patchy blowing dust after 3 p.m. and winds that may gust up to 26 mph, as reported by the National Weather Service. Dr. Carlo Hatem from the Hospitals of Providence said many with asthma or COPD may face breathing troubles and advised staying indoors or wearing a mask—especially because dust can carry fungal spores that sometimes cause valley fever.  El Paso Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • El Paso Americas High School softball team held off Abilene High 5&4 in eight innings in the UIL playoffs opener, coming from behind after trailing 3&0 early. The team will try to clinch the series on Friday as further playoff games are scheduled.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso high school baseball teams won their opening bidistrict playoff games with Midland Legacy rallying from an 8-1 deficit and Frenship winning 10-0, and Game 3s are set to resume later today if needed — several series finished on Thursday and Friday to set the stage for decisive matchups.  El Paso Times
