- ➤ The Vietnam Veterans of America Posts 574 and 844 hosted a 50th anniversary event at American Legion Post 58 in Northeast El Paso from 3-7 p.m. Saturday to honor those who served in the Vietnam War. - ➤ El Paso Fire crews responded to a two-vehicle crash on Saturday at Westwind and Thunderbird that knocked down power lines, pulled a woman from her car due to the lines, and damaged a light pole which left traffic lights out—El Paso Electric and the Streets Department are assessing the damage. - ➤ Early voting results from May 3 show that incumbent trustee Paul Guerra leads with 45% while newcomers Ryan Woodcraft, Charles Smith and Manny Rodriguez hold 58%, 56% and 50% in their races. The new trustees will take office on May 12 and will guide a district facing a budget deficit, layoffs and state oversight—as the board gears up to adopt a new budget and restart its superintendent search. - ➤ Early voting shows Diana Y. Mooy has won the EPCC District 6 seat with 59% of the vote and will be sworn in at the May 28 meeting—while incumbent Jesus Mendez in District 4, who got 51%, may face a runoff against political newcomer Eduardo Flores. El Paso Matters
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On May 3, voters cast ballots in a uniform election to choose members for local school boards, the Community College board, and several town councils across the county. Polls were open until 7 p.m. and results began being posted at that time—El Paso Matters provided live updates as votes were counted. El Paso Matters
- ➤ Voters in Horizon City, San Elizario, Anthony and Vinton cast ballots on May 3 to elect council members and mayors, with some races running uncontested. The vote also approved propositions—such as reauthorizing a sales tax for street repairs in Horizon City, a $5 million bond for water improvements near Fort Bliss, and a tax rollback in Vinton.
