CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Patrick Crusius, the Walmart gunman who killed 23 people in a racist attack at East El Paso in 2019, will begin his life sentence today at Pack 1 in Navasota—he was flown from El Paso to Huntsville and is not eligible for visitors. KFOX14
- ➤ Nearly 300 pounds of pork products including 275 lbs of bologna, 17.6 lbs of ham, and 7 lbs of chorizo were seized at Downtown El Paso's border crossing on Thursday night when officers found them hidden under floor mats in a Mazda CX-50 driven by a 61-year-old man with a prior smuggling record; the goods were destroyed as the case was turned over to federal authorities + potential civil penalties are being explored. - ➤ On May 7, officers at the Paso Del Norte crossing examined a U.S. citizen who mentioned she had a foreign object in her body and found 113 grams of fentanyl that were removed during a medical exam—she was arrested and will face federal smuggling charges. KTSM
- ➤ The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office warns that scammers are impersonating staff by using real names to ask for money, and the agency says it never contacts community members for funds while advising anyone reached to end the call and report the incident at (915) 273-3800. KVIA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Zavala Elementary School celebrated its 100th year with a parade featuring mariachi and marching bands even as EPISD plans to close it and seven other schools over the next two years because of low enrollment and aging buildings. Parents, teachers, and alumni expressed both pride and sadness while EPISD will reassign students to nearby schools starting next school year — a change that many feel is needed though it marks the end of an era. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Camino Real Regional Utility Authority said that its April tests showed two arsenic treatment facilities had levels of 6.2 and 4.5 ppb while one facility measured 12 ppb but was quickly adjusted to meet EPA standards. The authority will test the corrected facility on May 13 and May 20 — all protocols remain in place to keep customer water safe. KTSM

- ➤ Senator Cesar Blanco has introduced Senate Bill 1249 to address El Paso’s childcare crisis—he proposes a pilot program for after-hour care for single working parents. Childcare centers face long waiting lists of about three months and costs between $150 and $200 a week per child, and the bill will help families as the legislative session ends in less than a month.
