- ➤ Families on both sides of the border protested the cancelation of the Hugs Not Walls event on Mexican Mother's Day after the extension of the border military zone stopped planned reunions. Local officials joined protestors in denouncing policies that kept loved ones apart. El Paso Times
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Three people were seriously hurt in separate incidents on Sunday night in different parts of El Paso — one person was taken by ambulance after an incident at a convenience store on Woodrow Bean and U.S. 54 in Northeast El Paso at about 8:30 p.m. while two others were sent to the hospital after an incident near Hanks High School in East El Paso at about 6 p.m., with police investigating both events. - ➤ Officers responded to a shooting on the 5400 block of Dalton in Northeast El Paso on May 11th around 1 a.m.—two people were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. KFOX14
- ➤ On April 29 at 9 a.m., a man in his 60s was dragged after a suspected auto thief stole his white 2005 GMC Yukon near the 8200 block of Echo in northeast El Paso—police now ask the community to help identify the bald Hispanic man suspect described as medium to large build with a short beard and wearing a black sweater and blue jeans. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Richard A. Castro, a respected local philanthropist and owner of 27 McDonald's who employs over 2,000 people, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Texas State University to honor his long-standing support for education. He has donated about $2.3-million dollars to the university and founded the McDonald's El Paso Scholarships that help area students pursue higher education. KVIA

- ➤ Scientists say spring dust storms in El Paso have been the worst since the Dust Bowl — record heat, drought and strong winds have raised worries over health and the local economy. Air quality monitors recorded unsafe levels and hospital visits spiked, and forecasters expect more storms from Tuesday through Friday — prompting officials to consider actions to protect residents. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A proposal by the El Paso Police Department and TxDOT would station officers at active work zones to slow speeding and ease traffic for drivers and workers. The plan will be voted on at the City Council meeting this week and, if approved, officers could start patrols as early as next month—TxDOT will pay up to $147,767 for overtime and vehicle costs.
