CRIME NEWS

  • El Paso County taxpayers paid nearly $6 million for legal fees in the case against Patrick Crusius—the state covered most of the $1.9 million prosecution costs while defense claims that former District Attorney Yvonne Rosales’s actions significantly increased expenses.  El Paso Times
  • A Mexican national, Maria Del Rosario Navarro-Sanchez, 39, was indicted in El Paso on Friday for allegedly providing grenades and firearms to the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación—she faces charges including smuggling immigrants, trafficking in weapons, and bulk cash smuggling, marking the nation's first such indictment against a foreign national for supporting a designated terrorist organization.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Franklin High School’s mixed doubles team, Kendall Olivas and Ayden Fraire, earned a silver medal at the Class 6A UIL Tennis State Championships when they lost a 6—3, 6—4 final to a team from Fort Bend Clements. Olivas finished the season with a 24—1 record and Fraire with a 16—1 record, marking a strong performance for the duo.  El Paso Times
  • Graduation ceremonies for El Paso high schools, UTEP and EPCC start mid-May and continue into early summer—most events are at venues such as the Don Haskins Center, Abraham Chavez Theatre and Plaza Theatre. UTEP commencements begin today at 1 p.m. for the College of Health Sciences and College of Nursing while additional ceremonies are scheduled throughout May, June and early July.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso ISD trustees will meet Tuesday at 5 p.m. to vote on reversing the planned closure of Lamar Elementary School, an A-rated school serving over 180 local students — a move that shows the board is focusing on student needs — while some trustees worry the change could worsen budget shortfalls.  KVIA

  • Prosecutors in El Paso and Travis County sued the Texas AG on Friday over new reporting rules they claim violate state and federal law+ the rules force them to disclose sensitive case details and incur high costs while breaching the Texas Constitution.  KFOX14
  • On May 15, a federal magistrate judge in El Paso dismissed 12 military trespassing charges against border crossers because the government did not prove warning signs were visible—defendants still remain in custody on felony reentry charges.  KVIA

  • Memo Diaz returned to El Paso Locomotive after four years with Oakland Roots to be near his family when his daughter was born—he now uses his skills as a veteran leader. The team is climbing from last place to fifth in the Western Conference today—his return boosts both the field and locker room.  El Paso Times
