CRIME NEWS

  • Texas Rangers arrested Michael Lee Garcia on August 27 in El Paso for allegedly possessing and promoting child pornography, with investigators linking a BitTorrent computer that downloaded material in May depicting children aged five to twelve—Garcia admitted he had viewed the material multiple times.  KVIA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The closure of Santa Teresa’s cattle crossing in May due to a screwworm outbreak cost jobs and raised beef prices, with local trucking companies reporting heavy losses—impacting ranchers, distributors, and processors across the borderland economy.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SISD’s school board approved a three-year contract to pay El Paso native James Vasquez $285,000 annually after his interim tenure, and he will now manage a $454 million budget for over 46,000 students while planning a tax rate election to increase district revenue. Vasquez, who rose from local teacher to deputy superintendent, said he will visit each campus and adjust staffing to address declining enrollment (a key concern for the district).  El Paso Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday night, nearly an inch of rain fell on El Paso's westside, and water quickly flooded roads on Mesa (near Montecillo). Crews removed water and cleared drains clogged by debris while officials urged drivers to avoid flooded roadways.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County Commissioners approved a 24-cent tax rate for University Medical Center—raising property taxes by about $72 on an average home—to fund a $1.9 billion budget and pay off a $396.6 million bond. The EPISD board voted 6—1 to interview superintendent search firms at 5:00 p.m. Sept. 3, UTEP named James P. Carney as executive director of its Keck Center, and the city will begin drainage improvements in Sun Valley on Sept. 1 to reduce flooding.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso County approved a higher tax rate for University Medical Center that will add about $72 to an average homeowner's bill and help fund new hospital projects while EPISD will interview search firms on Sept.3 to find a new superintendent, UTEP named James P. Carney as executive director of the W.M. Keck Center for 3D Innovation starting Sept.1, and drainage work will begin in the Sun Valley subdivision on Sept.1 to ease flooding.  El Paso Times
