COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, El Paso residents gathered outside Erika Zamora’s home to form a long Prayer Parade to support her battle with liver cancer and a six-month prognosis despite intermittent rain (her family appreciates the community’s care).  KVIA
  • KVIA invites El Paso residents to send pictures of their borderland backyards for a chance to win a $100 gift card by entering the Borderland Backyards contest on the KVIA play page+ where instructions are provided, with Bar-B-Clean sponsoring the contest.  KVIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Old El Paso released the Sun Country Mexican Cookbook in 1978 to boost interest in Mexican food by offering recipes like Bean Bake, Chili Con Carne, Acapulco Pizza, and Meat ‘n Potato Tacos. The cookbook is part of a long history that began with Mountain Pass Canning in 1916 (the brand expanded nationally in 1955).  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tornillo Independent School District will implement the optional Bluebonnet curriculum from the Texas Education Agency that adds references to religious texts to its current Amplify program. Superintendent Rosa Vega-Barrio said the change was driven by new state funding — with input from parents and teachers — as local residents voiced mixed opinions.  KFOX14
  • El Paso Community College hosted its 26th annual campus and site improvement team orientation—Beyond Choch-Kees—where student government, the mental health committee and campus staff shared ideas to create a more welcoming campus. Students stressed the need for clearer signage and better information to help them navigate the campus.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Fifteenth Court of Appeals ruled against the temporary restraining order from Attorney General Ken Paxton because it violated free speech rights for Powered By People and Robert Francis O'Rourke. The decision came after the court noted little evidence was presented in the case related to fundraising for travel costs during redistricting efforts.  KVIA
  • Nearly 600 El Paso residents used free Uber vouchers in August provided by Texas DOT's Pick Your Ride campaign—an effort by the District Attorney's Office to reduce impaired driving. Since September 8, the office offered over 3,000 rides to help community members get home safely.  KVIA
  • On Saturday, September 13, 500 National Guard soldiers arrived in El Paso to assist Border Patrol—bringing additional manpower, equipment, and technology. Some soldiers began working on border infrastructure immediately while others underwent training under Title 8—preparing to detain illegal crossers.  KFOX14
  • On Sept. 12th, a Texas appeals court lifted a temporary restraining order that had blocked fundraising for Beto O'Rourke’s group, Powered by People—Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton offered little evidence of unlawful conduct. The court ruled that the order violated the organization’s free speech rights—delivering a partial legal victory in the dispute.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctor Peter Herman celebrated his retirement today after 50 years of service in El Paso (over 100 people attended his 87th birthday event). He said he will continue working by teaching residents and practicing dermatology at a Texas Tech clinic.  KVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • El Paso pro boxer Raiko Santana knocked out Steven Nelson at 2:38 in the first round yesterday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight—improving his record to 13-4 with seven knockouts. Trained by Tommy Galindo, Santana has lived in El Paso for three years—while Nelson falls to 20-2.  El Paso Times
  • The UTEP Miners trailed the No.7 Texas Longhorns 17 to 3 at halftime on Saturday at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. Texas scored first with a 2-yard touchdown run by A. Manning and later with a 39-yard field goal by C. Arreola.  KVIA
