GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso Border Patrol Chief Walter Slosar said new policy shifts and increased federal funding have reduced daily apprehensions from around 2,700 in 2023 to roughly 40 to 50 today by ending catch and release. He noted that enhanced infrastructure, technology, and manpower—afforded by a defense-level budget—are helping secure the 264-mile border while monitoring evolving threats from cartels and smugglers.  KFOX14
  • El Paso County's plan to transform the former Naked Harem strip club into the Corbin Sambrano Wellness Center stalled after voters rejected a nearly $27 million bond, leaving only $3 million spent on demolition and design. County Commissioner David Stout said they are considering simpler plans with available funds—ARPA and opioid settlement money—to prepare the site until full funding is secured.  KFOX14
  • El Paso County reached a settlement that states veteran prosecutor John Briggs should not have been fired after he refused to join illegal actions during the Walmart case. The settlement—approved by the County Commissioners Court on Monday and pending a judge’s signature—vindicates Briggs and restores his role at the district attorney’s office.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso County Commissioners are set to discuss a unified fire code and safety regulations for outdoor businesses—prompted by more than a dozen fires at salvage yards and recycling centers since 2019. If approved, the new rules will require existing businesses to comply within one year and impose fines of $100 to $500 per day for violations.  KFOX14
  • TxDOT’s new $1.3 billion plan will demolish 15 buildings downtown, including the Holocaust Museum, Triumph Public High School + the Recon office, to expand I-10 and ease traffic congestion.
