Good morning, El Paso. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 19th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • El Paso’s only child crisis center—founded in 1980 by Mary and George Russell—shelters up to 32 children aged 0-13 and now calls for volunteers and donations of uniforms, diapers, toys, and healthy food. The center is working with local agencies to find a local solution for older children in crisis who currently must be sent out of town due to limited resources.  KFOX14
  • Community members and local groups gathered outside the El Paso Convention Center to protest the planned Downtown I-10 expansion ahead of a TxDOT meeting — they shared concerns about the potential increase in traffic and changes to local streets.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USCIS announced on Wednesday in El Paso new naturalization rules that require officers to review moral character, check for positive contributions, and resume neighborhood investigations— the agency will also increase the number of civics test questions that applicants must answer to meet the new standards.  KVIA
  • The city of El Paso is using Chinese-made DJI drones near Fort Bliss without prior notification, and Fort Bliss is assessing any potential risks—officials say the program keeps data secure while federal rules limit purchases by state agencies. City and military leaders continue to examine the impact of the program, which began in 2018 with input from local university officials.  El Paso Matters

HEALTH NEWS

  • September brings many asthma triggers that lead to more attacks, emergency room visits, and hospital stays in the area. • Experts in El Paso said a recent study showed a 400% rise in self-harm incidents among 11-year-olds, prompting urgent advice for parents to secure household products and watch for signs like avoiding school or giving away personal belongings—clues that may point to early depression. Officials recommend parents also monitor digital behavior and online searches to catch troubling trends early.  KVIA
  • Texas Tech Health El Paso and University Medical Center broke ground today on the Fox Cancer Center at the Texas Tech campus—this over 350,000 square-foot facility will consolidate imaging, radiation, chemotherapy, clinical trials and preventive outreach. Funding includes over $130 million from state appropriations, a $25 million donation from the Fox family, a $5 million grant and a $30 million county bond, with the center set to complete in about three years.  KFOX14
