CRIME NEWS

  • El Paso’s chief military officer, Paul Albright — who cited health concerns — resigned after his resignation letter on Aug. 28 even as he was arrested on Sept. 4 on domestic violence charges from a comedy club dispute on Aug. 29.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • Franklin High's Mariachi group performed at Raising Cane's in West El Paso every Monday this September—celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with traditional music and supporting local fundraisers. The group will perform again on Monday, September 29th.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After a student was left at the wrong bus stop, EPISD is planning to use new bus tracking software with RFID chips and a mobile app to watch when students get on and off—hoping to fix route problems. The district will roll out the plan in phases as it adjusts bus routes and staffing to keep kids safe.  El Paso Matters

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • For 20 years, the Wakeem/Teschner Nature Preserve at Resler Canyon has been a quiet haven for nature and a community meeting place in El Paso—secured through local conservation efforts led by Frontera Land Alliance. El Paso Giving Day on Oct. 16 will support further environmental projects to protect this urban oasis and expand local conservation work.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas voters must register by Oct. 6 to vote in the Nov. 4 election—applications mailed or delivered to the El Paso County Elections Department must be postmarked by that date. Early voting begins Oct. 20 and voters can update their details online if needed.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso's city council released evaluations for City Manager Dionne Mack and City Attorney Karla Neiman that praised Mack’s accessibility and financial management while urging quicker council responses—Neiman was noted for effective staff management but needed to improve the speed of her answers. Mack’s contract was extended through March 2029 with her salary increased to $358,804.68, and Neiman’s salary rose to about $336,000 with an automatically renewing contract through December.  KFOX14
  • The Pellicano Drive widening project in far East El Paso will resume with Hawk Construction, which will finish Phase 1 by September next year — after $6 million in funds were allocated to improve the westbound lanes between Aircoupe and Loop 375. Local drivers and business owners say the delays have caused chaotic traffic and reduced sales, and they hope the new work will ease these problems soon.  KFOX14
  • Texas voters will decide on 17 constitutional amendments on Nov.4 that mainly propose tax cuts and funding changes for schools, water projects — and technical college improvements, with registration ending Oct.6 and early voting starting Oct.20.  El Paso Times
  • TxDOT has unveiled a $1.3 billion project to overhaul I-10 in downtown El Paso— the plan will rebuild and widen the highway while adding bike lanes and new sidewalks to improve travel conditions. The work is set to proceed in phases to help ease traffic delays.  El Paso Inc.

HEALTH NEWS

  • Construction began today on a $340 million Fox Cancer Center at Texas Tech Health El Paso—designed to provide comprehensive cancer care and advanced treatments to West Texas and the borderland.  El Paso Inc.
  • Dr. Kobe Gennrich from Texas Tech Health El Paso said that papaya seeds will not replace proper medicines for parasitic infections — he urged locals to get tested and use proven treatments instead, noting that a small study overseas found a benefit while most Americans do not experience these infections. He added that although papaya seeds offer nutrients, they should only be a small part of a balanced diet.  KFOX14

  • Local corn mazes and pumpkin patches will open for fall fun in the area, with La Union Maze in Anthony and Mesilla Valley Maze in Las Cruces starting Sept. 27 and El Paso Farm Land maze opening on Oct. 4 *Jumbo Park is also celebrating its first year with its pumpkin patch and family activities*.  El Paso Times
