BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new full-service car wash from Tidal Wave Auto Spa will be built at 1458 Lee Trevino Drive in East El Paso to offer both self-service and tunnel options for drivers. The $1 million project sits between a Golden Corral and a Jack in the Box near Trevino Plaza Shopping Mall — the contractor is listed as Leslie Ford with Ofi Chito.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Western Playland in Sunland Park is hosting Freaky Frights this October—featuring a Trick-or-Treat Trail from 2 PM—6 PM and scare zones from 6 PM—10 PM with themed treats and fun scares. The park will also have a Haunted Asylum and photo ops to give guests a spooky Halloween experience.  KFOX14
  • El Paso model and Teen Miss Texas Mia Navarro returned from New York Fashion Week where she saw herself on a Times Square billboard and walked a red runway — she represented El Paso while enjoying the experience with several celebrities. She will compete at Miss Teen USA in December, pursue a fashion journalism degree at NYU, and use her platform to address climate change in the community.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech Health El Paso is the only health sciences center that teaches medical Spanish to help future doctors and dentists talk with Spanish-speaking patients—students practice these skills at local community events. More than 800 students have improved their language skills, which builds trust and better care for patients.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso Community College has secured a $3.7 million five-year TRIO grant to support tutoring and help low-income and first-generation students— the college will use the funds to boost retention and graduation rates amid federal funding freezes affecting other institutions.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County faces a vehicle transaction backlog since House Bill 718 required dealers to issue metal license plates using the WebDealer system—County Judge Ricardo Samaniego said the volume will ease once new training sessions for dealerships in English and Spanish begin on Oct. 10, and local dealers like Anaya Motors worry that high season will worsen the backlog.  KFOX14
  • The City of El Paso is hosting community meetings from Oct. 6 to Oct. 10 at transit centers to review studies on a revamped transit system set to launch in 2026; the updates will improve travel times and routes by increasing frequencies, streamlining paths and ending low ridership routes (meeting times vary by location).  KFOX14
  • El Paso Zoo Director Joe Montisano is on temporary administrative leave amid lawsuits and loss of AZA accreditation, and city officials said he will not have access to his work email or cell phone while key facility upgrades are in progress—plans to reapply for accreditation will follow once improvements are completed.  El Paso Times
  • Bowen Ranch, a 70-year-old cattle ranch and community meeting place, closed its gates in Northeast El Paso as the city reclaims the land for a new TxDOT highway project — the Bowen family said its memories will live on with local residents.  KVIA
  • El Paso County commissioners will vote on a budget amendment that raises the operating budget nearly $9 million—adding over $500K in special revenue and $8.4 million in grants—to support juvenile justice programs, family and drug courts, nutrition meals, a new body scanner at the downtown jail and facility upgrades amid a budget deficit. Commissioners are expected to finalize the amendment today.  KFOX14

  • Today, El Paso native Kurt Gross crafts torpedo bats in his downtown shop that shift the bat’s sweet spot closer to players’ hands—these custom bats serve youth leagues and professionals alike. He produces around 25,000 hand-finished bats annually that are shipped worldwide and underline local innovation in baseball.  KVIA
