COMMUNITY NEWS

  • About 600 participants will join the 15th El Paso Buddy Walk at EPCC Valle Verde on Saturday, Oct. 4, with a $20 registration — a fundraiser for Down Syndrome Coalition and a scholarship for students with disabilities, while the El Paso Police Department recently graduated 38 new officers from its 138th academy class on Sept. 29. County officials said a $1.2 million project will upgrade the 10 baseball fields at the County Sportspark with energy-efficient LED lights and ball-tracking technology by December — the first of 19 park projects funded by the Capital Improvement Bond.  El Paso Times

  • New Deal Furniture in El Paso, one of the oldest family-owned stores, announced it will close permanently after 78 years, and its liquidation sale that started Oct 2 offers heavy discounts on home accessories and area rugs. The 64,000-square foot showroom at 7130 Gateway East Blvd.—which also includes a 50,000-square foot warehouse—is now available for sale or lease.  El Paso Times

  • Jacob Torres—15-year-old El Paso teen with autism and a student at Eastlake High School—is celebrated for illustrating the new children's book What Does Mateo Want to Play? by Alicia Luna after she spotted his work at a local Applebee's.  KFOX14
  • Disney on Ice is in El Paso this week at the El Paso County Coliseum, where a live show of figure skating, acrobatics, and dazzling stunts brings magical fun with Mickey Mouse and friends. The show features spectacular costumes and thrilling special effects — tickets are available online and in person.  KVIA
  • El Paso's Museums and Cultural Affairs Department awarded $260,000 to local artists and cultural nonprofits for new work and heritage projects — the funds will support upcoming initiatives.  El Paso Inc.
  • El Paso venues offer a range of Halloween attractions from outdoor haunted trails to ghost tours that run from today until November 1. Forbidden Acres Haunted House at 13162 Tobacco Road opens today with set evening hours—other events include themed park takeovers meant to suit different thrill levels.  El Paso Matters

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Hospitals of Providence and Tenet Healthcare Foundation have given UTEP College of Nursing $1.1 million for AI-powered simulation laboratories with enhanced manikins. The funding will boost the nursing program by allowing more students to train at once — the manikins will be housed in the Center for Simulation in El Paso.  KVIA
  • Today, the Education Matters Summit in El Paso featured speeches by Mayor Renard Johnson and Texas Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser—who gave a keynote address on new teaching methods to improve student outcomes—while educators discussed classroom changes to better prepare students for college. Dr. Erika Mein received the inaugural Richard Castro Excellence in Education Award from CREEED—an organization focused on boosting college readiness.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two federal judges ordered the release of El Paso County DACA recipients detained by ICE, with one freed on Sept. 24 and the other released on Wednesday after their detention was ruled unlawful. Legal advocates say the rulings send a clear message to the administration that ICE cannot arrest individuals protected by DACA without due process—attorneys demand an end to arbitrary detentions.  El Paso Matters
  • Texas voters will see 17 constitutional amendments on November 4 that include proposals to lower property taxes and fund water projects while also changing bail rules and tax policies. Lawmakers approved the measures earlier this year and voters must register by Oct. 6—this decision will affect state funding for public services.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso city council reviewed progress on the 'Envision El Paso' plan that guides future development, housing, and transportation over the next decade. City staff explained the update began in 2023—residents provided feedback on housing affordability, open spaces, and walkability, and a revised land use map is expected later this month before the plan's adoption in 2026.  KFOX14
  • The El Paso County Historical Commission received the 2024 Distinguished Service Award for preserving cultural heritage and supporting local initiatives in Texas.  El Paso Inc.

  • A recent study by SmartAsset shows that El Paso is the top city for housing affordability—residents spend 20.35% of their income on housing with an average monthly payment of $1,016 for both renters and owners.  KFOX14
