- ➤ This October, Halloween events in El Paso will offer haunted attractions and trunk-or-treat parties at local parks and amusement sites—Western Playland will host Freaky Frights with trick-or-treat stations and themed foods while Wet N’ Wild in Anthony features Haunted Scaregrounds with special hours, and today Bassett Place holds a free costume contest for kids. Additional events include Camp Cohen’s Spooky Fest, trunk-or-treats at local schools, and a Trick or Treat show at UTEP Opera on Oct. 31. El Paso Times
- ➤ Tyson Foods donated over $2 million to El Pasoans Fighting Hunger to buy industrial equipment that will speed up turning frozen chicken into family-sized portions — high school volunteers from Jesus Chapel School helped last Wednesday while the food bank plans to complete the purchase in the next few months. - ➤ Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc. plans to buy the Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino for $183.75 million, with the deal expected to close October 15. The 157-acre facility features 737 slot machines, 12 electronic gaming tables, a 25,000-square-foot gaming floor, a 600-person ballroom, a 78-room hotel operated by another company, a one-mile racetrack and a 733-seat stadium. - ➤ Blue Origin said that six passengers will board its NS-36 flight from its West Texas facility, including four business leaders, one scientist, and one mystery guest (who asked to stay anonymous), as the craft prepares for an 11-minute ride above Earth’s atmosphere. The New Shepard mission, its 15th human spaceflight, may launch on Oct. 8 from Launch Site One near the border. El Paso Times

- ➤ J&K Present is turning the space under the Spaghetti Bowl into a new concert venue on Sunday, Oct. 5, with Grammy-nominated Disclosure and Chanel Tres set to perform at 4 p.m. Organizer Kiki Cervantes said the event will feature local art and vendors as part of plans to transform iconic El Paso spaces and add more concerts in the future. - ➤ A new Preply study names El Paso the most bilingual city in the nation, showing nearly 40% of residents speak more than one language—almost double the 20% national average. The study used U.S. Census Bureau data and also found that 67% of locals speak Spanish at home. KFOX14
- ➤ A partnership called TAP is helping youth in juvenile detention use art to shape their future by teaming up with Juvenile Probation and Big Brothers Big Sisters. The program hosted an art exhibit and screening at the Probation Department on Thursday—participants will attend an art class and meet with mentors today at Creative Kids oLo Gallery. KFOX14

- ➤ Two experts testified at a federal courthouse in El Paso today on new Texas congressional maps that critics say discriminate against minority voters in a lawsuit filed by LULAC and other groups against Gov Abbott. The hearing begins at 9:00 a.m. today—testimony will resume on October 6. KFOX14
- ➤ El Paso city leaders reported at a Sept. 29 council meeting that nearly 8,900 bills were filed in the 2025 legislative session and 1,200 were signed into law, including SB 1008 which sets new noise limits on restaurants—more than $146 million was returned to the city for local projects like the Downtown I-10 Deck Plaza. They also noted that strong local support helped defeat proposals that would have reduced municipal control—ensuring local decision-making remains central. El Paso Times

- ➤ Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc. from Pennsylvania announced plans to purchase Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino in southern New Mexico for $183.75 million — the deal is set to close Oct.15 and will add a second property to its portfolio serving the El Paso-Las Cruces gaming market. KFOX14
