Good morning, El Paso. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 7th of October.

CRIME NEWS

  • The Center of Sexual and Family Violence said many in El Paso do not know they are facing domestic abuse when partners control their choices or use harsh words. The center shelters about 800 people yearly, with 60% being children, and uses social media—sharing words like gaslighting—to help locals spot abuse.  KVIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • A study by language learning app Preply found that El Paso is the most bilingual city in the United States as nearly seven out of 10 residents speak a language besides English and 39 percent are bilingual. The study also found that 67 percent of residents speak Spanish—making it the second most popular language in the city.  El Paso Times
  • Disclosure and Channel Tres performed in Lincoln Park under the Spaghetti Bowl in a one-of-a-kind open-air concert event that transformed the venue with its vibrant murals and car shows—organizers say more Detour Experience concerts are planned.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • El Paso School Finder, launched last October by CREEED, is marking its second year by offering updated profiles and performance data for more than 240 public K-12 schools so families can compare school options easily. The free website lets parents search by location, grade, or school type + it also serves educators and community leaders who want to stay current on changes in the school landscape.  El Paso Matters
  • Today, students at Logan Elementary School were dismissed after a fire extinguisher discharged and spread residue through the air vent—forcing a safe pickup at Chapin High School.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso residents can now use the AI-powered SuperCity app which launched today — connecting them with real-time city updates, news, and services from local government.  El Paso Inc.
  • El Paso still awaits Project Lifesaver as local agencies have yet to adopt the tracking program that saves lives by quickly locating people with cognitive conditions. The nonprofit, which has completed over 5,000 successful searches nationwide and is already in use in Doña Ana County, is ready to partner with officials if it becomes a local priority—if commitment is made soon.  KFOX14
  • El Paso County expressed concerns on Monday about the TxDOT design for the downtown I-10 project—warning that continuous turning lanes and Texas turnarounds may create hazards for pedestrians and cyclists. The county issued a letter urging safer design changes as TxDOT works on long-term transportation improvements.  KFOX14
  • A government shutdown is hurting local economies as key federal programs close, expert Tom Fullerton said—losses may reach $65 million in El Paso and $17 million in Las Cruces each week. Reduced federal services delay paychecks and military support while slowing cross-border work, and local officials warn of more challenges ahead.  KFOX14
  • State demographers project that El Paso’s population will grow slowly over the next 25 years—estimates range from nearly no growth to a modest increase, a stark contrast to its steady past rises. Lower birth rates and uncertain immigration trends may strain schools and public services if these projections hold.  El Paso Matters
  • Today, the El Paso County Commissioners Court will decide on the Ascarate Park Renovations Bond project—its proposed budget includes over $44 million for upgrades to walking trails, the entrance, lake, and bridge while Exigo Architecture is set to provide design and construction administration services over a 2.5-year period with an estimated fee of $4.2 million.  KVIA
