COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local residents write in urging the Deck Plaza project to add green space—improve air quality, add housing, and boost commerce—while some decry mismanagement at the zoo and oppose state promotion of prayer in schools. Another letter praises USDA Farm to School grants for supporting local food programs and sustainable projects in our community.  El Paso Times
  • TxDOT provided an update on the I-10 Westside project during Community Conversations, saying a new Valley Chile bridge will switch traffic in Q1 and reopen in 2027 while work continues on Desert South near Vinton and Logwood — with a frontage road opening mid-October and an intersection at Los Mochis set for summer — and the Mesa eastbound exit is expected to open by year’s end. Macias-Cervantes also urged sober driving during football season after recent DUI-related crashes.  KFOX14
  • An El Paso Electric map shows that 11,662 Lower Valley customers are without power early today—1 a.m. data shows 28 outages—and updates will follow as the situation continues.  KFOX14
  • El Paso will host several local events this weekend with workshops, art shows and musical performances planned from October 10 to 12. The schedule includes a chocolate making workshop at Three Missions Brewery along with lego building sessions, painting classes and local markets—featuring both free and ticketed entry.  KFOX14

  • A new QuikTrip convenience store is planned for 12245 Montana Ave, at the corner of Montana Ave & State Loop 375 in far East El Paso. The project is valued at $1.5 million and will add auto fuel canopies and a fuel stop near Olive Garden, Pueblo Montana Apartments, and PetSmart.  El Paso Times
  • Village Inn and Butter Smith Kitchen and Pies are giving free pie with an entree purchase every Wednesday in October from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.—the offer features apple, cherry, pumpkin, French silk, and coconut pies made fresh all day.  KFOX14

CRIME NEWS

  • A nurse in El Paso surrendered his license on Sept. 24 amid allegations of having inappropriate sexual relationships with patients from 2021 to April 2025—state documents show he may apply for reinstatement after a year.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The El Paso Independent School District Board approved a timeline for the search for a new superintendent today—deadlines include October 10 for stakeholder feedback, November 10 for application review, initial interviews on November 14 and 17, and follow-up interviews on December 2 and 3 with a potential posting of the finalist on December 3. Interim superintendent Martha Aguirre, who began after Superintendent Diana Sayavedra left, will continue to lead the district until a successor is chosen.  KVIA
  • UTEP Press held a book signing on Tuesday for the new book Get Back Up: Lessons in Servant Leadership — it is the first publication since its August relaunch. UTEP President Heather Wilson and retired General Dave Goldfein shared leadership lessons from their military and government experiences, and funds raised will help the UTEP ROTC scholarship fund and Leaven Kids.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso International Airport began a solar canopy project on Oct. 5 that closed key parking lots to install nearly 2,300 panels and generate 1.33 megawatts of power. Travelers are redirected to alternative parking and the project will finish in February 2026—requiring extra planning during busy travel times.  El Paso Times
  • Today, the City of El Paso completed $2.5 million renovations to Fire Station No. 15 at 115 Shorty Lane in the Upper Valley — updates include new door frames, windows, a kitchen, lighting, plumbing, and refreshed restroom and locker room facilities to boost public safety. ABC-7 covered the ribbon cutting celebration that marked the event.  KVIA
