- ➤ Today, EPCC and the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank hosted a free grocery pick-up event at the EPCC Transmountain Campus—providing fresh produce and other foods for students, staff, faculty and the public until all food was taken. KVIA
- ➤ Families in El Paso feel relief as a ceasefire takes hold in the Middle East and both Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners have been released. Residents with family abroad, such as former council member Peter Svarzbein, said the move offers hope despite ongoing challenges in contacting loved ones—many still rely on social media for updates. - ➤ Data shows alleged assaults on educators across three local school districts—El Paso ISD reported 17 incidents, Ysleta ISD 14 and Socorro ISD one in the current school year—and parents are worried while officials work with law enforcement to address each case. KFOX14
- ➤ Margarita Gonzalez was accused by the Texas Board of Nursing of using nurse license numbers from similarly named nurses to work at Mountain View Nursing and Rehabilitation and Patriot in El Paso while also providing care at Las Cruces Wellness from February to May, and the case has been sent to the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Charter schools in El Paso serve over 14,500 students as tuition-free public schools run by independent groups that get most of their funding based on daily attendance and use a lottery when demand exceeds available seats. Texas law allows these schools to operate with fewer regulations than traditional public schools while they are reviewed annually by the Texas Education Agency—providing families an alternative educational option. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ El Paso city council approved a resolution today—allowing Mayor Renard Johnson to sign an Interlocal Agreement with UTEP to manage a $40 million aerospace award from the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Build Back Better Regional Challenge. The city will receive $25 million to build an Advanced Manufacturing District at the airport while UTEP gets $15 million for technical support to local manufacturers. KVIA
- ➤ El Paso Water is replacing old water meters with new digital models to help find leaks faster and ensure accurate billing—40% have been updated and all residential meters will be replaced by the end of 2026. KVIA
- ➤ El Paso City Council unanimously approved a plan to co-apply for UTEP’s Build Back Better Regional Challenge Grant—a move aimed at boosting local industry and streamlining city services. The council will manage $10M in funds and the initiative is expected to create 500 jobs by 2027. KFOX14
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ NAMI El Paso is hosting its annual NAMIWalks 5K event at Ascarate Park on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. to promote affordable mental health care and support those in need; the event has raised nearly $71,000 of its $95,000 goal and is expected to draw over 1,000 local residents (every dollar raised stays in El Paso). - ➤ El Paso health inspectors completed checks from Oct 6 to Oct 10 and found that two Mexican food restaurants received scores of 71 and 72—barely meeting the minimum of 70, and they have been given the chance to fix violations before a reinspection. El Paso Times
