CULTURE NEWS

  • Las Artistas Art & Fine Crafts Show marks its 55th anniversary as it continues through the weekend at the Epic Railyard, drawing hundreds to view handmade art and listen to live music—supporting local talent.  KVIA
  • Sunland Park hosted the Rayenari light festival at the Sunland Park Sports Complex, where immersive light displays, music, and art vendors brought the regional arts community together. Artists and students from Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona showcased works that celebrated cultural heritage—its name meaning sun in the Rarámuri language.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • District leaders marked the launch of construction on Saturday morning—this $106.8 million project builds a new Canutillo Middle School to replace the old facility on Bosque Road and better serve growing neighborhoods near Artcraft Road. The 165,000-square-foot school will feature modern classrooms, athletic fields and a redesigned bus loop and is expected to be finished in late 2027.  KVIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Stargazers in El Paso can watch the Leonid meteor shower peak tonight as debris from comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle produces about 10 to 15 meteors per hour visible in the eastern sky—ideal conditions given the waning crescent moon at 9%.  El Paso Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Parents in Chaparral saw the new Teen Mock Bedroom Tobacco and Drug Prevention Trailer at the Parent Prevention Expo hosted by Action for Healthy Kids and Paso del Norte Health Foundation on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Delores Wright Community Center—designed by the National Guard Joint Counterdrug Taskforce to show how everyday objects can hide vaping devices and drug paraphernalia. This tool aims to help families learn to spot risks and start conversations about youth substance use.  KVIA
  • A team from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center El Paso and UTEP received a $40K grant from Sobel-Duncan Border Health Research Award to study chronic ankle instability in the Borderplex region—researchers will use a new smartphone tool with artificial intelligence to check walking patterns and help doctors diagnose the issue. The tool will be available in August 2026 and may also help spot other joint problems.  KVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Eastwood Troopers defeated Frenship 45-30 in a critical playoff game when backup quarterback Bentley DeVries stepped in for injured starter Kingston Jeffries and the defense grabbed two interceptions — the win improved their record to 10-1 — and they will face Trophy Club Byron Nelson next weekend.  El Paso Times
  • The UTEP Miners lost to Utah State 75—51 as they struggled with scoring and trailed nearly the entire game, and they will play St. Thomas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center.  El Paso Times
  • The UTEP football team lost 38-24 to Missouri State after rallying from a 24-7 deficit but faltering in the fourth quarter, dropping its record to 2-8. The team will face New Mexico State at the Sun Bowl in its final Conference USA game at 1 p.m.  El Paso Times
