COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girl Scouts in El Paso began online sales of the new Exploremores cookie on Monday, Jan. 5 and will sell door-to-door and at local booths, including Walmart, starting Sunday, Jan. 18 — each pack costs $6.  El Paso Times
  • After New Year's celebrations, El Paso Animal Services faces a surge of lost pets at their Fred Wilson Ave shelter. Officials urge residents to scan for microchips & visit the facility or website to help reclaim missing pets or consider fostering.  KFOX14

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Pizza Joint plans to open a new East Side location at the corner of the Emerald Park Plaza, 13034 Eastlake Blvd in about three to four weeks. The restaurant, housed in the former Toro Burger, will offer patio seating and its signature big slices.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • El Paso’s cultural calendar is busy this week as UTEP men’s basketball opens its homestand today at the Don Haskins Center against Middle Tennessee and the annual Jewel Box Series starts Jan. 11 at the Plaza Theatre with local theatre, music, and performances. Hikes and art events enhance the schedule.  El Paso Matters
  • A variety of concerts and big events have been announced in El Paso for 2026. On Jan. 23, Parker McCollum and Kevin James perform at Don Haskins Center and Abraham Chavez Theater (ticket prices vary), with additional shows scheduled through April and September.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas agency is hosting a public meeting at Riverside High School today at 7 p.m. to gather local views on Marathon Petroleum's 10-year air permit renewal for its oil refinery in Lower Valley (the decision may impact local pollution levels).  El Paso Times
  • El Paso City Council approved Phase Two of an $11.7 million expansion at Beast Urban Park in Far East, which will add 650,000 sqft of athletic space including 10 pickleball courts, two sand volleyball courts, and two basketball courts while upgrading parking and restroom facilities.  KVIA
  • Ysleta del Sur Pueblo elected new Cacique Johnny (Juan R.) Hisa during its Annual Tribal Elections on Dec. 31, 2025, following the passing of Cacique Jose G. Sierra Sr. The new 2026 Tribal Officials took office on Jan. 6, signaling a continued commitment to local tribal governance.  KVIA
  • TCEQ holds a public meeting today at 6 p.m. at Riverside High School (301 Midway Drive) to review Western Refining's request to renew its air quality permit, which would let the Lower Valley refinery keep operating. Residents can send comments by mail or online.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Health and Human Services revised four children’s vaccine recommendations on Jan. 6 to a shared decision model between parents and doctors amid a flu surge, and experts urge parents—especially in Latino communities—to discuss vaccine choices with pediatricians.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso schools and community members are responding to new USDA dietary guidelines that emphasize proteins and reduce added sugars in school meals. Pediatrician Dr. Hassan Salloum and Socorro School District's Shelly Chenausky say programs will adjust to the changes — the updates are expected to support healthier student meals.  KFOX14
  • El Paso Public Health urges residents with disabilities and medical needs to register with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR) so responders can assist during emergencies. In January, staff will help at senior centers, starting today at Pavo Real Senior Center from 9 to 11 a.m.  KVIA

  • Montwood High School basketball player Jazlynn Hernandez surpassed 1,000 career points during her school's 54-30 win over Pebble Hills on January 2, and she was honored with her family in a ceremony ahead of Tuesday's game against Coronado.  KFOX14
