- ➤ UTEP computer science and nursing programs were ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report in its December issue. The ranking highlights strong academics and social mobility support that prepare students for jobs at major tech firms and healthcare facilities. KFOX14

- ➤ Johnny Hisa was elected cacique after the Dec. 31 election and took office on Jan. 6 at the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, following former leader Jose G. Sierra Sr.'s passing. Tribal officials stressed preserving traditions and strengthening cultural ties for the community. El Paso Times
- ➤ Residents met at Riverside High School on Thursday to discuss Marathon Petroleum’s request to renew its air permit for the Western Refinery Plant and to ensure public involvement. City Rep Josh Acevedo urged a contested case hearing as TCEQ has yet to set a decision timeline. KFOX14
HEALTH NEWS

- ➤ On Thursday, Jan. 8, the UTEP men’s basketball team, missing four players, rallied to win 83-80 in overtime against Middle Tennessee while the women’s team lost their contest.
