  • GreenPower Motor Company will soon open its new U.S. headquarters and EV manufacturing plant in Santa Teresa, creating 340 jobs + boosting the local economy.  El Paso Inc.
  • Singapore Cafe closed its doors on Jan. 9 at 10:54 a.m. at 3233 N Mesa St. on the West Side after more than 20 years serving Southeast Asian dishes like Pad Thai, and a sign expressed thanks to loyal customers.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two El Paso beauty queens were crowned nationally in Orlando last Saturday—Gia Soleil Espinoza won Miss Earth USA and Mia Autumn Navarro became Miss Teen Earth USA—and they will now serve as ambassadors for environmental service and youth leadership.  KVIA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gov. Abbott said gas prices in Texas may fall below $2 following a GasBuddy screenshot showing sub-$2 rates at stations north of Dallas and elsewhere. AAA data from Jan. 9 indicate most counties remain above $2, with El Paso priced around $2.68 per gallon.  El Paso Times
  • Texas faces a potential drop in gasoline tax funds as more electric vehicles hit the roads. To address budget shortfalls for highway and road projects, state officials are planning EV registration fees and road usage charges.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of El Paso has opened warming centers at select recreation centers and library branches to provide residents with heat, blankets, and support services. Operating hours vary from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and residents can call 3-1-1 for more details (blankets available upon request).  KVIA

  • Austin Adams from A&W Automotive in East El Paso advises car owners to check their battery, tires & wiper blades and let their engine warm up amid dropping temperatures this weekend. Local auto stores can test vehicles for proper freeze protection.  KVIA

  • UTEP Miners won 83-80 in overtime on Thursday at Don Haskins Center as Kaseem Watson scored 23 points to spark the comeback before Elijah Jones sealed the win (UTEP is now 5-10 in conference).  KFOX14

  • Canutillo alum LJ Martin, the Big 12 offensive player of the year, will return to BYU for his senior season—after missing the Pop-Tarts Bowl due to shoulder surgery. He aims to break the school’s rushing record during his final campaign.  El Paso Times
  • ABC-7 Xtra Sunday – The Future of the Sun Bowl will air tomorrow at 10:35 p.m. on ABC-7, where host Andrew J.
