  • The Animal Rescue League of El Paso shelter in Canutillo currently cares for 108 dogs + 102 cats amid a year-round influx after New Year’s. The shelter urges adopters to ensure they can meet a pet’s lifelong care needs before adopting.  KVIA

CRIME NEWS

  • An El Paso doctor agreed to pay $200,000 to settle allegations that he issued 255 controlled substance prescriptions without following required guidelines — he will also surrender his DEA registration and Texas medical license.  KVIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • El Pasoans are invited to nominate local women who made key contributions to American history for the 2026 Women of the Year project ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Nominations are open and submissions should use hashtag #WomenofUSA250.  El Paso Times
  • The action thriller One Battle After Another — partly filmed locally with nearly $6 million in spending — earned 13 Oscar nominations, including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and best supporting actor for a faceoff between Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn. The ceremony will be held on March 15.  El Paso Times
  • Krystall Poppin Day is set for Jan. 27 with a fundraiser for a local church on Jan. 31 after her appearance on ABC-7’s noon newscast. Her milestones include a charting album and national TV walkouts (featuring noted artists), highlighting her impact as an artist and community advocate.  KVIA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mexico President Claudia Scheinbaum announced a multi-million dollar highway project that will cut the drive from 15 hours to 10 between our borderland and Guaymas' port & beaches, boosting exports and tourism. ABC-7 will cover the project tonight at 10 p.m.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Josue Borrego, the new Canutillo ISD superintendent, set plans today to boost student success by removing roadblocks and enhancing safety, including an officer and new security cameras at every campus — during efforts to promote transparency as the district tackles financial challenges.  KFOX14
  • Matthew Taylor, a special education teacher and former basketball coach at Eastlake, filed a discrimination charge with the EEOC after his removal from coaching in December. His attorney claims Taylor was removed following a disability-related medical episode and he seeks immediate reinstatement while school officials said he remains a teacher.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Travelers arriving at El Paso International Airport without a Real ID or acceptable identification will face a $45 fee for the new Confirm ID option starting Feb. 1, TSA said + travelers must complete an online verification form and use QR codes at checkpoints to validate their identity.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Wednesday, advocacy group Children at Risk (citing evidence that 400 children were detained) urged a federal policy overhaul to end immigration enforcement practices that harm children’s mental health, and DHS has not yet responded.  KFOX14

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pete Zamora returns as manager of the El Paso Chihuahuas for the 2026 season, marking his third season in charge and 11th year with the Padres organization. The team will open its season on March 27 against Sacramento at Southwest University Park.  KFOX14
  • UTEP Miners won 83-77 over FIU at the Don Haskins Center on Thursday as Jamal West Jr. scored 28 points to lead his team. The Miners will host Missouri State on Saturday while FIU plays at New Mexico State.  KFOX14
