CULTURE NEWS

  • El Paso artists gained national acclaim with Grammy wins, including Vikki Carr with three awards and Irvin High alumna Germaine Franco for her work on Disney's Encanto. Other local talents like The Mars Volta have also built a strong musical legacy in the community.  El Paso Times
  • The International Museum of Art and the El Paso Black Arts Association hold their second annual Black Arts Gallery to celebrate Black History Month (featuring 125 local art pieces that highlight aspects of Black history and identity). The inclusive exhibit runs through Feb. 22.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas parents can apply for Education Freedom Accounts, a school voucher program offering financial support for private, homeschool, and other educational expenses, starting Wednesday, Feb. 4. Eligible students may receive up to $10,000+ annually, and online applications give priority to low-income students and those with disabilities.  KFOX14
  • Mariachi Los Gatos Salvajes from Fabens ISD will compete in the UIL State Mariachi Festival in Seguin on Feb. 8 + they have earned Division I ratings at the West Texas Mariachi Festival for four consecutive years.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • UTEP researchers found a sharp increase in kissing bugs carrying the Chagas parasite along local trails and near residences, raising public health concerns. They plan to launch a collaborative surveillance project with the Texas Department of Health to better track risks for humans + pets.  KVIA

  • El Paso's all-time leading rusher Ray Ray Estrada was featured in the latest 'Catching Up' interview, where he shares details about his career, his bond with his older brother (Feb. 1), and why he chose the Golden Gophers.   • Tristen Newton, a local basketball star (former all-city selection), will join the NBA's Castrol Rising Stars event on Feb. 13 at the Intuit Dome where he will represent the Rockets on a two-way contract and compete under coach Austin Rivers with other rookies and second-year players.  El Paso Times
