COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Special needs guests will enjoy a prom later this week at LifeGate Church’s donated gym, where makeup stations, beard trims and shoe shine services are offered (volunteers joining as buddies must pass background checks), while organizers need more volunteers, donated attire and funds to cover costs of $8,000 to $12,000.  KVIA
  • The El Paso VA Healthcare System invites community members to send Valentine’s Day cards to hospitalized veterans during National Salute to Veteran Patients Week, Feb. 8-14 (cards may be mailed to 5001 N. Piedras in El Paso).  KFOX14
  • ABC-7 recognized Staff Sergeant Nicole today for completing five years in the Air Force, following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather who also served. The report salutes her service and honors local heroes.  KVIA

  • Movie lovers in El Paso face disappointment as Triple Tap Ventures announced that both Alamo Drafthouse locations — in west and east — are set to close. Ticket purchases and season passes will be refunded and the company said it hopes to return later.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Jan. 9, an 8-year-old student with autism left Desertaire Elementary and walked nearly two miles home, raising questions about Ysleta ISD's campus safety protocols. Officials said each campus handles such incidents, though the family said notification was delayed until the child was found.  KFOX14
  • Two students from El Paso ISD advanced to the Texas State Spanish Spelling Bee after excelling at the Education Service Center Region 19 event Saturday. The state competition will take place on June 4 at the Starlight Event Center.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction on the 90-year-old American Canal is underway to repair erosion damage along the border near Ciudad Juárez (close to Fort Bliss) while the International Boundary and Water Commission manages the project to preserve this historic waterway.  El Paso Times
  • A proposed binational tram project aims to connect the El Paso and Juarez international airports and reduce long border wait times. The plan, presented by Desarrollo Económico del Norte (DENAC), is still under review, and El Paso officials say a formal proposal is needed before any action can be taken.  KFOX14
  • TxDOT has scheduled road closures and lane restrictions on I-10 and other roads from Feb. 8-14 to support roadwork and upgrades. Drivers should follow posted detour signs and plan travel accordingly.  KFOX14

  • On Monday, Feb. 9, more than 100 Sun City Seahawkers gathered at Three Pints Pub in northeast El Paso to cheer the Seahawks' Super Bowl win (the event was hosted by the official booster club, which has represented Seattle in the area since 2014).  KFOX14
  • El Paso’s Desert Devils 14U baseball squad clinched a championship in Arizona recently, with Head Coach Adrian Romo crediting innovative technology + modern methods for their success. The team is set to compete in a tournament in Phoenix in just over two weeks.  KFOX14
  • On Feb. 9, high school softball games in El Paso saw Americas defeat Eastwood 12 – 2 with standout hitting by WP O’Hara, while other schools like Franklin, Canutillo, and Del Valle posted scores during a scoreboard covering Feb. 9 – 14.  El Paso Times
