CULTURE NEWS

  • Hundreds of El Pasoans gathered at St. Patrick Cathedral yesterday at 7 a.m. for an Ash Wednesday Mass that marked the start of Lent with prayer and reflection (including families, soldiers, and couples) in a peaceful, bright setting.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso hosts a busy weekend with events including Tuff Hedeman's bull riding extravaganza — tailgate party at the County Coliseum on Saturday —, The Wiz performances through Sunday at Plaza Theatre, and a Black History Month celebration this Saturday at EP Community College.  El Paso Times
  • Local groups host a free desert foods workshop at the Mexican American Cultural Center (11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21) and the annual El Paso Marathon in downtown (7 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22), with additional cultural exhibits, author talks and Black History Month events across the borderland.  El Paso Matters

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fabens High’s Los Gatos Salvajes mariachi band is practicing for the UIL state competition in Seguin that began Wednesday and will end Friday. The band earned a Division I rating for the fourth year in a row at the West Texas festival on Jan. 31.  KFOX14

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, strong winds damaged neighborhoods with fallen trees, ripped shingles, and scattered debris on streets and yards. City crews are clearing hazards and residents are assessing damage (call 3-1-1 for help) as stronger gusts are expected.  KVIA

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Local eateries launched meatless Lenten menus starting Ash Wednesday to offer seafood and traditional dishes for diners in El Paso. Options include Mac's Downtown (315 E Mills Ave.), The Lunch Box, Catfish Basket, Cafe Mayapan and El Dia de los Pescados with varying hours and specials.  El Paso Times

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new Speedway gas station and convenience store is planned for 2208 Joe Battle Blvd in East El Paso, with a one-story building and fueling sites to be built on a vacant lot across from a Circle K. The Dimension Group applicant, Melissa Chavez, is leading the $1.2 million project.  El Paso Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bel Air High School named Ariel Famaligi as its new head football coach and athletic coordinator last Wednesday. Famaligi (former head coach at Montwood High and offensive coordinator at Franklin) replaces Gary Recoder, who resigned in January.  KVIA
  • Marathon organizers announced a new course for the 2026 Michelob Ultra El Paso Marathon on Feb. 22 that will start at San Jacinto Plaza, run through Downtown, Austin Terrace, and Edgemere, and finish at San Jacinto — with over 700 participants expected.  KVIA
