  • El Paso County expressed its sorrow over the passing of Fred Loya Sr. and honored his legacy as a community leader who supported local celebrations (Holiday Lights on the Lake at Ascarate Park in 2022 and 2023).  KVIA

  • James Beard-nominated chef Emiliano Marentes opened Taqueria Elemi at 7729 Paseo del Norte in January, and the West Side crowd now enjoys quality tacos made with freshly made tortillas and the option to pick up orders through a window joining it with Tin Man + experience an authentic, relaxed taqueria.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Taco Palenque will host a Gabriel Iglesias meet-and-greet tomorrow, Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its new location (7122 Gateway Blvd. E., Suite B) with a $10 Fluffy Combo available during the event.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thirteen Anthony High School band students (45% of the band) qualified for the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest after competing at the UIL Region contest at Hanks High in early February. They will travel to Austin over Memorial Day weekend for the contest.  KFOX14
  • El Paso Special Needs Education Center received state approval to accept vouchers under the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program so eligible children may attend at no cost starting in August as part of its inclusive model for students with and without disabilities.  El Paso Matters
  • Several Socorro ISD mariachi programs earned Division 1 ratings at the UIL State Mariachi Festival on Saturday in Seguin, Texas, marking a milestone for outstanding music + arts education in our schools.  KFOX14
  • Fabens High School’s Mariachi Los Gatos Salvajes earned its first-ever UIL State First Division rating at the contest in Seguin, marking the first 4A mariachi program from El Paso County to do so & two sophomore musicians received Outstanding Performer medals.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mark Rielo has been named the new medical center director of the El Paso VA Health Care System where he will oversee a $735M budget and services for over 44,000 veterans along multiple sites in the region—he previously served as acting director since September 2024.  KFOX14

  • Researchers at Texas Tech Health El Paso are advancing new treatments for pancreatic cancer and heart disease today. Ramadevi Subramani Reddy is testing gedunin from the neem tree to fight cancer — while Dr. Kazue Okajima examines blood thinner data to improve patient care.  El Paso Matters

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Redfin Real Estate data from January shows that El Paso housing costs range from $128,903 on the bottom tier to $641,894 in the luxury tier, with middle tiers priced in between. Economists predict affordability will improve later in 2026.  KVIA
