CULTURE NEWS

  • El Paso metalsmith Claudia Ley uses her jewelry to share her family’s legacy—learned from her father and grandfather—that spans a journey from China to Mexico to El Paso.  El Paso Times
  • Los Tigres del Norte will perform in El Paso on Sept. 11 at the UTEP Don Haskins Center during their Los Tigres del Mundo tour next year. Ticket sales open tomorrow.  KFOX14
  • El Paso Museum of Archaeology will host free Poppies Fest from Friday, Mar. 13 at 5 p.m. to Sunday, Mar. 15 at 2 p.m. at 4301 Transmountain Road. The festival highlights Native traditions, local artisans and land preservation + features live performances and hands-on activities.  KFOX14
  • El Paso hosts a vibrant 10-day calendar as the Lunar New Year celebration unfolds on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Cleveland Square Park with family fun, while the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and live shows by Chicago, Gladys Knight and Heart line up from Feb. 27 to March 6.  El Paso Times

  • El Paso residents were surprised when their gas bills nearly doubled this month because of a sudden rise in delivery fees and higher winter use; Texas Gas Service said rising costs and a rate design update contributed to the increase.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • El Paso ISD announced Wednesday that several mariachi programs earned UIL competition ratings. Franklin High School earned its third Superior Rating, EPISD Austin senior Yannel Gutierrez was named Outstanding Performer, and Chapin, Austin and Coronado High Schools earned Excellent Ratings while Jefferson Silva High School competed at state for the first time — a milestone for local arts.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • UTEP students can now access free, anonymous naloxone from El Paso’s first Narcan vending machine—installed by Recovery Alliance at the Student Union—during building hours; the machine holds 300 boxes with overdose instructions to help address rising concerns about fentanyl.  KFOX14
  • El Paso’s United Way Center for Resiliency offers ongoing monthly events to help residents overcome stress and boost mental health + encourages community members to register for additional supportive services.  KVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, over 6,000 runners from 48 states and 9 countries competed in the El Paso Marathon’s full, half, and 5K races in downtown El Paso; Luis Rivera Rodriguez and Caittie Britton won with times of 2:35:59 and 3:16:53 (spectators cheered the course).  KFOX14
  • UTEP Miners men's basketball season enters its final four games after a loss to New Mexico State in Las Cruces on Feb. 25, as the team prepares for a road trip. They will face Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State to qualify for the Conference USA tournament.  El Paso Times
