  • The El Paso County Sheriff's Office invites locals to join a 5k run/walk honoring fallen Deputy Peter J. Herrera on March 8 at Ascarate Park. The event begins with a 7:30 a.m. opening and a race at 8 a.m., with fees from $45 to $60 supporting his scholarship fund.  KVIA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • 2Ten Coffee Roasters, a local brand, will open a fourth drive-thru at 11680 Montana Avenue (east El Paso) this summer; owner Steven Svoboda said the new shop will offer a cozier layout serving fresh roasted coffee and real food to boost the local coffee scene.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ron Stallworth, who infiltrated the KKK as a detective in Colorado Springs, was inducted into the El Paso Black Hall of Fame today; he said his undercover work dismantled racist myths + left a lasting impact on our community.  KFOX14
  • Local third-generation metalsmith Claudia Ley honored her family’s legacy by crafting silver jewelry and offering workshops and exhibits that displayed heirlooms and traditional techniques. She showed her art in her home studio and at local venues such as the El Paso Museum of History.  El Paso Times
  • Los Tigres del Norte will perform their 'El Norte Es Mas Alla de La Frontera' tour at the Don Haskins Center on Sept. 11 at 8:30 p.m.—tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster and the UTEP Box Office.  El Paso Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • El Paso residents questioned Texas Gas Service — some natural gas bills nearly doubled due to a new rate design shifting more fees to delivery — as the company cited a market price spike and increased winter demand. Further notification details are still pending.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • El Paso area school districts set varying spring break dates this March. EPISD and Socorro ISDs will hold intersession from March 9–13 and spring break from March 16–20, while Ysleta and Anthony ISDs start intersession earlier from March 2–6 or March 3–6 with break from March 9–13.  El Paso Times
  • High Desert Oral and Facial Surgery and Texas Tech Health El Paso have endowed a $500,000 residency leadership position to build a local oral surgery training pathway—this four-year program will immerse residents in rotations at three clinical sites beginning in July.  KVIA
  • For spring break, local groups will host camps and workshops for kids featuring art, STEM, and outdoor fun. Programs run March 2 to March 28 at sites including EPCC, Bab's Boutique, and the Loya YMCA (registration is required) while details vary by location.  El Paso Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • El Paso health officials confirmed four measles cases among young adults and began contact tracing for exposures from Feb. 20-22 (including visits to Cici’s Pizza and Outlet Mall). Residents are urged to check their vaccination status and contact a provider if they develop fever and rash.  KFOX14
  • An El Paso mother testified at a Senate hearing today that the FDA’s decision to block treatments for Duchenne muscular dystrophy has made it harder for affected families. Lawmakers and experts also raised concerns over inconsistent review processes that delay access to needed medications.  KFOX14
