  • Today, six women at the El Paso Fire Department worked a full shift to honor International Women’s Month — a milestone as only 19 of 900 firefighters are women. Officials say the shift may inspire more women to join the ranks.  KVIA
  • Carlos Spector, 71, a local immigration attorney known for aiding migrants, died Sunday following a head and neck cancer diagnosis; his daughter announced plans to create a foundation to honor his legacy + funeral arrangements are pending.  El Paso Matters
  • The El Paso Rhinos hosted their 19th Annual Teddy Bear Toss on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the El Paso County Coliseum during Kids Weekend. Fans tossed teddy bears to honor former UTEP professor and season ticket holder Joni Arnett and support local charities.  KFOX14

  • El Paso held a Lunar New Year celebration on Saturday, Feb. 28, marking the Year of the Horse with lion and dragon dances, martial arts, crafts, and a special exhibit at the El Paso Museum of History honoring 150 years of Asian heritage.  El Paso Times
  • Youth Opera of El Paso invites families to experience its new children’s opera — A Note of Explanation — with multiple performances from March 6 through 8. The production, based on a rediscovered children’s book, gives young performers a hands-on opportunity to love opera.  KVIA

  • El Paso history teachers warn that fewer Mexican American studies classes may limit students' chance to learn their heritage—only three EPISD schools now offer the course instead of five, and forthcoming state curriculum changes could further narrow local history lessons.  El Paso Matters
  • UTEP hired a new specialist to lead its relaunched mining program — a move that marks a clear step in enhancing technical education at the university.  El Paso Inc.

  • A total lunar eclipse known as the blood moon will begin at 4:00 a.m. EST on Tuesday, Mar. 3, and last until about 7:00 a.m. EST, with NASA (which describes the moon's reddish hue) advising viewers to seek dark skies for best views in El Paso.  El Paso Times

  • El Paso's Nolan Richardson was inducted into the NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on March 1, and he was honored alongside four others for his record-setting coaching career that began at Bowie High.  El Paso Times
  • ESPN sources report that Aaron Jones and Javon Hargrave will be cut by the Vikings later this month unless a trade occurs. The move will free $18.65 million in cap space, and Jones— a UTEP alum and AA All The Way Foundation founder— marks his second season after leaving the Packers.  KVIA
