CULTURE NEWS

  • Polish pianist Julian Stani will perform today at UTEP's Borderlands Chopin Festival and Competition at Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. His free performance, his first in El Paso, features works by Chopin, Brahms, and Juliusz Zaremski.  KFOX14
  • Jazmine Ulloa’s new book 'El Paso: Five Families and One Hundred Years of Blood, Migration, Race, and Memory' was published Tuesday by Dutton, and she will discuss it Monday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at the Philanthropy Theatre in downtown where signed copies will be available.  El Paso Matters
  • The Youth Opera of El Paso debuts its new children’s opera A Note of Explanation at Plaza Philanthropy Theatre today with four performances through March 8. The show is based on a nearly century-old hidden royal story (commissioned in 1922) and showcases local young talent.  KFOX14

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in El Paso jumped 31 cents this past week and now stand about 30 cents above the state average, according to the American Automobile Association. Some drivers are switching to motorcycles and keeping their cars properly maintained to cut fuel costs.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • IDEA Public Schools El Paso is hosting its annual 5K run/walk and healthy living expo as part of its Healthy Kids Here initiative + the expo begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 7 at Ascarate Park.  KVIA
  • Faith Jeon, a student at Transmountain Early College, earned a $200,000 Navy ROTC scholarship on Thursday at a special event (she was one of 14 chosen from the region) that covers full college tuition and provides a monthly tax-free stipend for her training as a Navy officer.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • The City of El Paso Department of Public Health confirmed two measles cases today, raising total cases to six after one case each at a jail and Camp East Montana. Officials urge residents to review vaccination records and visit local clinics (7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday) for walk-in immunizations.  KVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Downtown Southwest University Park will host the 2026 season openers for Locomotive FC on Saturday, Mar. 7 – with themed games and fireworks – and for the Chihuahuas on Tuesday, Apr. 7 when fans can enjoy giveaways and family activities.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso's Nolan Richardson, Bowie High alumnus + legendary basketball coach, is to be honored by the University of Arkansas with a statue outside Bud Walton Arena. Commissioning work is set to begin soon.  El Paso Times
  • UTEP beat Kennesaw State 78-71 and New Mexico State edged Jacksonville State 77-75 in overtime on Thursday at their home centers. Both teams hold a 7-12 record in Conference USA and remain in postseason contention with one game remaining.  KFOX14
