Good morning, El Paso. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • Jaime Adrian Contreras was arrested on April 14 for the disemboweled murder of his 74-year-old father, whose body was found on the 11700 block of Ronald McNair Drive on April 12—he claimed an alien had harvested his organs.  KFOX14
  • An El Paso husband and wife were sentenced in federal court to a combined 25 years in prison for meth trafficking and firearm offenses after a March 5th traffic stop led officers to seize drugs and weapons from their home.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ysleta ISD will ban unvaccinated students aged 4 and older from attending classes and extracurricular activities as measles cases have been reported in three high schools—students must show proof of two doses of the MMR vaccine to participate.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso city leaders held a press conference Tuesday morning at City Hall to discuss an updated contract with VENU for the planned more than 12,000 seat Sunset Amphitheater in Northeast El Paso. The council held a public hearing on amendments that expand the project from 17 to 20 acres, increase the minimum investment to $100M, and add a clause to hire local workers—after title issues delayed the land transfer originally expected in December.  KVIA
  • City officials approved updates to a public-private deal with VENU to build a 12,500-seat outdoor concert venue at Gateway North and Cohen Avenue in Northeast. The new plan raises private investment to $100 million, expands the site to 20 acres and adds an El Paso First clause — the City also set a $31.5 million incentive package with tax rebates and waived fees to support the project set to open in 2026.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • The City of El Paso Department of Public Health confirmed five new measles cases, bringing the total to 13. Officials are tracing contacts and working with state partners after cases were found in unvaccinated individuals—one an Eastwood High School employee—and they advise residents to check their immunization status if exposed.  KFOX14
