COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hospitals of Providence and El Pasoans Fighting Hunger will hold a formal community announcement today at 11 a.m.—the event will detail their plan to address food insecurity in El Paso.  KVIA

CRIME NEWS

  • Patrick Crusius—who killed 23 people and wounded 22 in a 2019 Walmart attack—will plead guilty Monday at 10 a.m. in the 409th District Court before a sentencing of life without parole follows impact statements from over 40 victims.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Socorro Independent School District candidates for Districts 2 and 3 are running to address a decade-long financial crisis, declining enrollment and budget shortfalls in Far East El Paso. Early voting begins April 22 and the election is May 3 — candidates propose budget cuts, increased transparency and alternatives to tax increases to help stabilize the district’s finances.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The El Paso Downtown Management District introduced a grant program to spur more housing in Downtown and has created the Downtown Residential Conversion Utility Upgrade grant to support utility improvements on properties being changed to homes. The program will help property owners upgrade systems and convert older buildings for residential use.  El Paso Inc.
  • Homeowners who disagree with their property appraisal must file a protest by May 15 or within 30 days of receiving it since the value affects their property tax bill—residents should bring evidence like printed photos, repair estimates and exemption documents and submit the protest forms by dropoff, mail, fax or email as directed.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • El Paso reported five new measles cases on Thursday, bringing the total to 18 with most cases among unvaccinated adults or those with unknown vaccine status. The City of El Paso Public Health launched an online dashboard (updated daily at 9 a.m.) and offers walk-in immunizations at local clinics (Lower Valley, Henderson, Northeast and Westside Community Clinics).  KFOX14

  • The Cover Girls, an all-girls dance team of dancers aged 19 and under from El Paso, are preparing to compete in the World of Dance Championships in Los Angeles from July 17 to 21—after six seasons of hard practice, they will showcase their skill against top dancers.
