ECONOMY NEWS

  • Texans currently pay two gas taxes, with a state rate of $0.20 per gallon and federal rates of $0.184 per gallon for gasoline and $0.244 for diesel (set by federal law and the state legislature), while some officials called on lawmakers yesterday to suspend the taxes amid rising prices.  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A U.S. appeals court ruled Tuesday that Texas can require public schools to display donated Ten Commandments posters in classrooms. Canutillo ISD said it will consult legal counsel and plan the display as required by Senate Bill 10.  KVIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • H-E-B gave out free Earth Day tote bags featuring Garner State Park at select store locations on April 22 as supplies lasted + customers could also buy additional reusable bags for $1.50 to support environmental efforts.  El Paso Times
  • Water managers along the Rio Grande are facing water shortages after early snowmelt and low reservoir levels were reported on April 22. Irrigation releases will begin April 28 — water supplies remain at risk unless summer monsoon rains bring relief.  El Paso Times

  • Drivers in west El Paso face traffic delays as Cement Lake repairs prompt lane closures along Loop 375 and Doniphan — the police assist in managing the reduced lanes to ease morning commutes. El Paso Water says crews work to reduce pressure on the dam that could overflow.  KFOX14
  • City officials warned BTS fans not to climb the Franklin Mountains for the Sun Bowl concerts on May 2-3 because the loose rock and height pose a danger & they will enforce ticket-only entry with security and law enforcement to prevent trespassing.  El Paso Times
  • Texans will save on emergency supplies tax starting Saturday, April 25 through Monday, April 27 as Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock explains that qualifying items include household batteries, flashlights, and portable generators under $3,000 (online delivery charges may be taxable).  El Paso Times
