- ➤ A public memorial event honoring local artist Hal Marcus will take place Sunday, Apr. 26 at Casa Ford on Montana Ave from 12-3 p.m. His renowned painting 'El Paso Gracias a Dios' will be unveiled with tribute performances by Eden Performing Arts and light refreshments provided by Cafe Mayapan. - ➤ On Thursday, Canutillo ISD was named one of the nation's best music education communities by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation — recognizing its strong focus on fine arts, including a reinstated jazz band and plans for orchestra and mariachi classes. KVIA
- ➤ UTEP raised $1.6 million for Memorial Gym renovations by beating its $1.5 million goal with a $1 million lead gift. Renovations will move forward on campus later this year. El Paso Inc.
- ➤ Ysleta Independent School District expects a $16 million budget deficit for the new school year. Officials said the shortfall comes from an $11 million loss in state funding due to tax relief changes for elderly or disabled homeowners (and they also expect enrollment to drop by about 1,500 students). - ➤ El Paso Water warned on Thursday, Apr. 23 that worsening conditions at Cement Lake (located between Interstate 10 and Doniphan Drive) show signs of a potential dam breach as crews lower water levels and police close nearby roads for safety while the utility consults with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
