COMMUNITY NEWS

  • TxDOT announced that Interstate 10 between Redd Road and Mesa Street in West El Paso will be closed for 49 hours from 4 a.m. today to 5 a.m. Monday to let crews switch traffic to new inside lanes—crews will move barriers and install markers along the stretch. Detour routes will require eastbound drivers to exit at Redd and re-enter at Sunland while westbound drivers exit at Mesa and re-enter at Redd.  KFOX14
  • This weekend in El Paso offers a variety of events—family fun at Washington Park with free books and a parade at Dia de los Niños, guided tours and photography at Keystone Heritage Park, and a J Balvin concert at Don Haskins Center today. An 80s night at La Nube is set for Friday, a rock show is planned for Monday, and comedian Jerry Seinfeld will perform on Thursday.  El Paso Times
  • A Borderland teenager and his mother honor their late friend Belen with an annual lemonade stand for childhood cancer that has raised over $30,000 in 12 years and will also support Logan’s Lighthouse—a charity for a friend battling Ewing sarcoma. Belen, who was diagnosed with leukemia and died days before her 15th birthday in 2020, inspires this ongoing community effort.  KVIA

  • This week, victims and families of the August 3 Walmart shooting addressed the shooter for the first time as ABC-7 archived their impact statements—preserving the unedited voices of those deeply affected by the tragedy.  KVIA

  • Renowned writer Benjamin Alire Sáenz, 70, held his first gallery show Friday night at Studio 1929 to inspire a sense of belonging in the community. He said painting lets him share honest feelings — the free event featured food, music and live performances for everyone to enjoy.  KFOX14
  • Rosa's Cantina has been a local landmark since 1957 and is linked to Marty Robbins' hit song El Paso as it now serves a full menu and signature drinks following COVID renovations—owner Patricia Teyes invites locals to explore its rich history and homemade Mexican fare.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In April, during National Safe Digging Month, Texas Gas Service urges El Paso residents to call 811 at least two days before starting any digging project—this free service helps prevent damage to pipelines, waterlines and electric cables. They also advise using hand or soft digging techniques to avoid injuries and service outages.  KVIA
  • The Sunland Park Fire Department and local water utility officials are working to upgrade hydrant systems after a house fire in a neighborhood on Calle Diaz revealed low water pressure and flow. Fire Chief Medrano said crews had to call extra help — officials plan costly upgrades as part of ongoing regional improvements.  KFOX14

  • On April 24, the Texas UIL softball playoffs kicked off in El Paso as Americas won 15-0 over El Paso High and El Dorado and Young Women's Academy also advanced in their series—setting a competitive tone for the playoffs. Games will continue Friday and today in Classes 4A, 5A and 6A with matchups scheduled at various times.  El Paso Times
  • Chapin HS senior Jayden Leverett reflects on his high school sports career and said he will join a college team in the fall—his comments underscore the lessons he learned while preparing for a new level of competition.  El Paso Times
