CRIME NEWS

  • City leaders met with families and advocates on Monday to discuss proposals to toughen DWI enforcement + penalties following a March City Council session, aiming to reduce repeat drunk driving incidents in the community.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • British singer Morrissey will bring his 'Make-Up is a Lie' tour to the Don Haskins Center on Friday, Nov. 6 & tickets go on sale at noon on Friday, May 1 via Ticketmaster.com and the UTEP Box Office.  El Paso Times
  • Latin popstar Karol G announced her Tropical World Tour as ticket presale began Monday, Apr. 27 at 10 a.m. ET. The U.S. stadium tour kicks off in Chicago on July 24 — it includes a show at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso on Sept. 6.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso will host a busy weekend on May 2-3 featuring Comic-Con at the Convention Center, Michelada Fest at Ascarate Park, Sol Summit Music Festival at San Jacinto Plaza and a sold-out BTS concert at Sun Bowl Stadium. Comic-Con will run Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday until 5 p.m., and BTS will perform at Sun Bowl Stadium at 8 p.m.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • El Paso school districts will face budget deficits next school year after the state miscalculated hold-harmless funding for lost property tax revenue due to raised homestead exemptions. District officials say they will cut costs and add spending reviews (deadline May 8) while seeking state action to safeguard student programs.  El Paso Matters
  • Clint ISD announced Monday, Apr. 27 that 340 teachers will join a $5.5 million compensation package for improved student performance, awarding bonuses averaging $16,000 with tiers offering up to $23,500 based on designation levels.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT announced that from today to May 3 drivers will face lane closures and detours along I-10 near Vinton (crews are working on widening and repairs) as travel schedules adjust. Motorists should follow posted detours and plan ahead for delays.  KFOX14
  • EP Water pumped 17 feet of water from Cement Lake, stabilizing the dam and reopening Doniphan + Paisano and Highway Loop 375 in West El Paso. The utility now is planning a long term fix for the dam’s structural issues.  El Paso Times
  • A water main broke in Far East El Paso Monday near Montana Avenue (close to Desert Meadows Road), affecting one to 49 customers. El Paso Water has not provided a repair timeline.  KVIA
