  • Yolanda Tinajero, whose brother was killed in the August 3rd Walmart mass shooting, hugged the accused gunman during a plea hearing in El Paso on April 22nd, and Judge Medrano allowed the gesture & said it showed a way for the community to heal.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown El Paso's Mexican American Cultural Center will host its first Cinco de Mayo celebration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring free live mariachi music + folklorico performances, antojitos, mescal tastings, guided tours, art activities, and a meet-and-greet with the artist-in-residence.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • El Paso teens in grades 9 through 12 must apply by 5 p.m. on May 16 for the FBI Summer Teen Academy—held at 660 S. Mesa Hills Drive with sessions on Tuesday, July 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn techniques in evidence collection, arrest procedures, and investigative tactics from FBI agents during the hands-on program.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidates and PACs in the EPISD and SISD school board races raised a total of $203,800 by April 25, with Kids First PAC giving over $96,000 — supported by local business leaders — to fund their campaigns. The money will back efforts to address school closures and budget cuts as voters prepare for the May 3 election.  El Paso Matters
  • TxDOT is urging residents to plan sober rides for upcoming May celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo, graduations, and Memorial Day — officials warn that even one drink can impair driving and lead to serious accidents. The agency cited past data showing numerous alcohol-related crashes and fatalities in Texas and El Paso and advised using rideshare services or designating a sober driver.  KFOX14
