  • Two eight-week-old kittens — Jersey and Jazz Cat — are getting ready for their spay, neuter, and other care before being available for adoption at a local shelter, and a third kitten from the trio known as Three Musketeers will soon join them.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County is hosting a gun buy back event on Saturday, May 17 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the SISD Student Activities Complex at 1300 Joe Battle Blvd—participants will receive a Mastercard gift card ranging from $50 for non-functioning firearms up to $200 for assault rifles while ghost guns will not be accepted and all firearms must be unloaded and placed in the trunk for an anonymous, no-questions-asked exchange.  El Paso Times
  • El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank joined Feeding Texas in opposing a proposed $230 billion cut to SNAP and warned that the reduction would force vulnerable families into tough choices — the nonprofit unveiled the site for its new food distribution center in West El Paso on April 25.  KFOX14
  • El Paso City Council approved $1 million for a Segundo Barrio revitalization project to improve streets, sidewalks, ADA and bicycle paths, and upgrade storm and wastewater systems. The project’s funding will be matched by an extra $4 million from the federal government — delivered by Congresswoman Veronica Escobar — while some local upgrades have already begun.  KFOX14
  • On Tuesday, May 13, the El Paso County Sheriff held the 8th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony at the sheriff’s office on Justice Rd during National Police Week—honoring fallen officers including Deputy Peter Herrera and Constable Robert White who paid the ultimate sacrifice.  KFOX14
  • Today, El Paso City Council passed an 8-0 resolution to submit an application asking for $5,000,000 to fund the I-10 Deck Plaza project that will link uptown and downtown; the application will ask for $4,000,000 in federal funds with matching contributions from the city and the Deck Plaza Foundation (at $750,000 and $250,000 respectively).  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local doctors say El Paso residents face breathing problems as dust storms continue to strike the area. UTEP expert Dr. Gabriel Ibarra-Mejia noted 26 storms have been recorded since January—a sharp rise from the usual average, and pulmonologist Dr. Fahad Omar advised limiting outdoor exposure and wearing masks.  KVIA
