CRIME NEWS

  • El Paso County records show that taxpayers spent $4 million for defense and $1.9 million for prosecution in the case of Patrick Crusius, the gunman who killed 23 and injured 22 at a Walmart in 2019—costs that rose with extra expert fees and judge recusal motions before he pleaded guilty to capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to life without parole.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTEP will hold four graduation ceremonies on May 17 and 18 starting at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., with about 3,500 students expected to graduate along with an average of 15 guests per student. The Don Haskins Center enforces a clear bag policy and bans large signs, noisemakers and helium balloons — rules designed to maintain order — while officials urge everyone to arrive early to ease parking and traffic issues.  KVIA
  • Canutillo ISD Superintendent Pedro Galaviz will retire on Dec. 25 due to budget challenges and political concerns. The school board rescheduled its meeting to May 20 to choose an interim leader and review plans for layoffs and staffing cuts — actions aimed at reducing a projected deficit.  KVIA

  • Representative Gabe Vasquez announced an updated Humane Accountability Act after a report by Amnesty International revealed alleged poor conditions at the local detention center— the bill will require the Department of Homeland Security to send details of any abuse to Congress, while U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it strives to keep detainees safe. This legislation comes amid growing concerns about safety and human rights at immigration facilities.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • El Paso will host a drive-thru measles vaccination event at the El Paso Zoo parking lot on Monday, May 19 from 2 to 7 p.m.—eligible participants are those 12 months or older with no appointment needed, though those over 68, pregnant, or immunocompromised are advised not to attend. The city reported 53 measles cases as of May 15.  El Paso Times
