CULTURE NEWS

  • This week, Memorial Day events in the Borderland honor military sacrifice with free flag ceremonies at Fort Bliss National Cemetery on Monday, May 25, interactive history exhibits at Old Glory Memorial starting Friday, May 22, and a community hike at McKelligon Canyon, plus downtown art markets today (all free).  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso artist Matthew Jay Martinez revived his Dream Monster mural at Commercial Screen Printing Inc. in Segundo Barrio this past May — he painted the 14-ft mural using eight gallons of paint and six spray cans in five days to spread creativity and positivity across the city.  El Paso Times
  • Sun City Tiki is set to bring a Polynesian nightlife festival to downtown on Saturday, Aug. 8 at the El Paso Convention Center — the event will feature tiki cocktails, live music, hula lessons, fire dancing, and a limbo competition.  KFOX14
  • Today, the City of El Paso launches Party on the Plaza at San Jacinto Plaza for salsa night with headliner Team Havana and DJ Ritmo Limon — future events will include mariachi and country nights plus late museum hours and an art and farmers market under the stars.  KVIA

  • The El Paso Independent School District faces a severe budget crisis today as it works to finalize its budget — the board is reviewing spending decisions to address revenue gaps.  El Paso Inc.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Oct. 1, Texas will pay 75% of SNAP admin costs—bringing an estimated $117 million in extra annual expenses that could rise to nearly $709 million if error rates stay high. Local advocates in El Paso urge officials to delay the change to protect food access.  KFOX14
  • The Texas Health and Human Services Commission awarded over $1.8M in grants to support military families in El Paso, funding Child Crisis Center ($1,042,500) and El Paso Center for Children ($825,000) through the Service Members, Veterans and Families Program, announced Sen.
