ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, county officials and industry leaders from the U.S. and Mexico unveiled plans to boost Tornillo Port of Entry with a $1.3M study and a $100K ad campaign aimed at supporting Mexican industries and offering commercial cargo drivers 50% discounts — the strategy comes as officials adjust trade routes due to changes at nearby ports.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The El Paso ISD board voted 5-2 on Tuesday to keep Lamar Elementary open indefinitely, reversing plans to close it under the Destination District Redesign program. Board President Leah Hanany said the decision corrects flawed data used for closures & the board also approved new hiring rules for key administrative roles ahead of budget talks.  El Paso Times
  • Lamar Elementary at 1440 E Cliff Drive was saved from closure after a 5—2 vote by the EPISD board on May 20, keeping 46 teachers and about 280 students in place. District officials said the school will require roughly $3.2 million a year to operate while the district addresses its rising budget gap.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso police have around 1,000 officers while the city's population increased by nearly 50,000 over five years, and about 300 officers are close to retirement—creating challenges for public safety. The department will add 37 new recruits at a police academy graduation tomorrow to help meet the growing demands of a nearing 700,000-resident city.  KFOX14
  • El Paso County Attorney Christina Sanchez and District Attorney James Montoya — along with Travis County officials — filed a lawsuit on May 16 against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton challenging new rules that require the release of sensitive case files. The suit argues that these rules violate privacy laws and constitutional limits and seeks an injunction to stop their enforcement.  El Paso Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hospitals of Providence is honoring first responders during National EMS Week by giving meals and gifts at its Transmountain Campus. Business development manager Chris Celaya said the 51st-year tribute thanks the crews who provide emergency care on the streets—helping get patients to hospitals.  KFOX14
  • El Paso health officials said measles is infecting mostly adults due to high vaccination rates among children, and they urged adults who are unsure of their shot records to get vaccinated. They plan vaccination events aimed at adults — a move that may help prevent spread to unvaccinated kids.  El Paso Times
