  • This Memorial Day weekend, El Paso residents can honor tradition and enjoy many community events. Volunteers can place flags at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 6:30 a.m. today, while families can watch outdoor movies, listen to DJ shows, join a mini golf tournament and pub crawl, visit a farmers market and reptile show, run a 5K at 9 a.m., see fireworks after the Chihuahuas game, and attend a comedy fundraiser for the El Paso Zoo—events running from May 23 to May 25.  KFOX14

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police said a Fort Bliss soldier riding his 2015 Yamaha YZF at high speed lost control and crashed—hitting a concrete center barrier on Spur 601 near Fort Bliss—on May 19 at 1:36 a.m. and died at the scene.  El Paso Times
  • Firefighters are working to extinguish a mobile home fire near Anthony High School on Wildcat Drive — Kelwood Street while another blaze burns on George Dieter in East El Paso.  KVIA

CRIME NEWS

  • A 32-year-old man was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Horizon City last Saturday after a crash was reported around 10 p.m. at Darrington and Roslyn—he was charged with a BAC over 0.15 and held at the El Paso County Detention Facility with a bond of $15,000.  KFOX14
  • Patrick Crusius, 26, the convicted El Paso Walmart shooter who fatally shot 23 people in 2019, has been moved to the Louis C. Powledge Unit in Palestine — less than three hours from his hometown of Allen — where he will continue serving his life sentence.  El Paso Times

  • Filmmaker Ryan Rox will release their debut feature film Hidden Flora—about a New Mexico teen exploring identity and first love—drawing on personal experiences and animator Paul Lopez's influence. The film promises to offer hope to queer youth by balancing dark themes with light visuals.  KFOX14

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • El Paso reached 101 degrees at 3:34 p.m. on May 22nd when it recorded its first triple-digit temperature of the year—residents said they preferred the warmer air while using air conditioning and staying hydrated during the heat.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • University Medical Center of El Paso will open its first urgent care clinic on Tuesday, May 27 at 12261-C Eastlake Blvd. to ease crowding at its East Emergency Department on Joe Battle Boulevard, and the 4,200-square-foot clinic near Horizon City will offer 10 private treatment rooms with nurse practitioners available daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. — another urgent care center on the Westside is in early planning.  El Paso Matters
