ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on the 1300 block of Rim Road in Central El Paso early Saturday after 2 a.m.—fire officials said one person was seriously injured while another refused transport.  KTSM

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said that one person was injured in a shooting along the 1700 block of Dana Michelle Street late Friday, May 23 in far East El Paso—he was taken to the hospital.  KTSM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Doña Ana Community College will offer free workshops to help students complete FAFSA applications on May 27, June 5, and June 24 at its Espina and East Mesa campuses. The sessions will assist with filing for both current and upcoming aid cycles.  KTSM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said he is working hard to fix the old downtown jail after three inmate deaths and staffing shortages raised safety issues. He will ask the county for funds to build a new jail and has started adding more cameras and a computerized system—steps to better protect inmates and officers.  El Paso Times
  • A tour on April 2nd of the El Paso County Downtown Detention Facility showed that special separation cell blocks for high-profile gang members and those with mental health needs were kept under 24/7 camera monitoring - staff conducted checks every 30 minutes while inmates remained confined for 23 hours a day.  El Paso Times
  • On May 23, the El Paso Police Department honored new officers from its 137th Police Academy at the Starlight Event Center & Mayor Renard Johnson and Chief Peter Pacillas recognized the graduates’ achievement.  El Paso Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • El Paso residents hosting Memorial Day cookouts are urged to follow food safety tips to keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot—using separate utensils for raw and cooked items and a food thermometer to check proper cooking temperatures. Experts say proper meat handling and swift refrigeration help prevent foodborne illnesses at gatherings planned for tomorrow.  El Paso Times
