COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The planned Downtown deck plaza received its first private donation of $1M to help fund the new dog park—boosting local efforts to create a safe, welcoming space for pets.  El Paso Inc.

CULTURE NEWS

  • American Idol alum Julián Kalel will perform at San Jacinto Plaza on Saturday, July 4 as part of America 250 Celebration, while local performer Krystall Poppin is set to take the stage on June 27 at Biggs Park on Fort Bliss; both events are free and open to the public.  KFOX14
  • La Original Banda El Limón de Salvador Lizárraga will perform at Speaking Rock Entertainment Center on Saturday, Sept. 19. The free outdoor concert (21+) starts at 6 p.m. and will feature the band's 61-year legacy along with a fresh musical evolution.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nicolas Ontiveros Arrieta, a fourth grader from Mesita Elementary, earned second place at UTEP’s History Day contest and was the only fourth grader at the statewide competition. He also received the Mayor’s Team of Excellence Award for his academic achievements & community service.  KFOX14
  • EPISD detected a $52 million gap in early May due to fewer students and high staff costs - prompting officials to consider spending cuts and potential layoffs. The district will ask voters later this year for a bond to fund necessary school repairs.  El Paso Matters
  • Local school districts prepared high school students for the Primary Runoff Election by teaching voter registration and civic duties, and officials from Canutillo, Socorro, and SISD partnered with nonpartisan groups to help students understand the voting process.  KVIA
  • Ysleta ISD is offering free breakfast and lunch for children ages 1-18 at Del Valle, Eastwood, Parkland, and Valle Verde Early College High Schools starting June 1; breakfast is served from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on weekdays through June 26.  KVIA
  • Canutillo ISD trustees approved a district restructure Tuesday night that adds 20 staffing positions (including teachers, aides, and specialists) and adjusts budgeting with $1.56 million in costs and over $1.2 million in projected savings for the upcoming 2026-27 school year.  KFOX14

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • El Paso will launch the Beautify Our City campaign in June to curb rising litter and illegal dumping. City officials will educate residents on proper waste disposal, promote volunteer cleanups through the Adopt a Street program, and offer a $20 collection station pass for eligible households.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Judge Samaniego will present a resolution Monday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m. at the Enrique Moreno County Courthouse declaring June 13 and 14 as Viva La Lucha Weekend to honor the 5K race at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino; proceeds will support League of Heroes and other community initiatives.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Planet Fitness is relaunching its annual High School Summer Pass to offer free gym access for teens ages 14 to 19 from June 1 through Aug. 31. The program allows online or in‐club registration (parental waivers may be required) and gives access to trainers, equipment, and exclusive Gymshark discounts.  KFOX14

  • El Paso natives Ricardo Pepi and Alex Zendejas were named to the 26-man U.S. World Cup squad, and the team will face Paraguay on June 12, Australia on June 19 and Turkey on June 25— the roster was confirmed on Tuesday.  KFOX14
  • El Paso Locomotive will face AV Alta today in the Prinx Tires Cup at Southwest University Park as they try to end a recent skid and get back to wins — the game starts at 7 p.m. and offers a canvas tote bag giveaway and $1 Busch Light for fans.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso boxer Moises Rodriguez earned a gold medal for Team USA in the 55-kilogram division at the Copa America Tournament held in Cundinamarca, Colombia on Monday, May 25. He completed the event with a perfect 7-0 record, marking his second international gold in 2026.  El Paso Times
