COMMUNITY NEWS

  • El Paso Community College & El Pasoans Fighting Hunger are hosting free grocery pick ups every Tuesday from June 2 through November at its campuses; residents must bring a bag or wagon to collect groceries.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTEP broke ground on Miner Crossing, a $102 million freshmen dorm building with 507 beds + a 22,000 sqft dining hall and 1,350 sqft fitness center, near Kidd Field on Glory Road on May 28; it will open for fall to ease on-campus housing needs.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso Independent School District trustees will vote Tuesday on a proposal by Superintendent Brian Lusk to cut 410 positions (250 on campuses and 160 in central offices) to save $28 million amid a budget shortfall. Affected employees can request a hearing with the board.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the city council voted to sell the historic Albert Fall House at 1725 Arizona Ave to Edge Limited Co. for over $800,000—built in 1907 and once listed as endangered by Preservation Texas, it is set for its first sale in nearly 20 years.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • In March, Texas Tech Health El Paso’s Dental Oral Health Clinic provided free dental screenings and cleanings for 60 uninsured older adults — dental students and faculty offered on-site treatment plans to address local care gaps.  El Paso Matters
  • UMC hosts a support group for stroke survivors to learn stroke symptoms and share their recovery stories during Stroke Awareness Month. The meetings take place every last Tuesday at 6 p.m. (in the neuroconference room).  KVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • UTEP football games will air on FOX networks, The CW, and new MW+ streaming from July 1. Home contests on FOX include Oct. 10 vs Nevada, Nov. 7 vs Hawai’i and Nov. 14 vs Wyoming, while the only non-Saturday game, a road match at Air Force, airs on Nov. 21.  El Paso Times
  • Holly Holm and Stephanie Han will meet tomorrow at the El Paso County Coliseum on ESPN for a 10-round rematch for the WBA lightweight title. Holm, a former three-division champion, must show aggression to challenge Han, who won their previous bout on Jan. 3.  El Paso Times
