CRIME NEWS

  • El Paso County Attorney Christina Sanchez obtained a temporary restraining order to close Oriental Massage Spa after an investigation showed it broke state law by offering unauthorized erotic services and using unlicensed staff— the spa will remain closed until June 12.  KFOX14
  • Jaime Renteria-Fernandez, a 31-year-old from Albuquerque, is in federal custody in El Paso after being indicted on nine counts related to drug trafficking, money laundering, discharging firearms and murder—he was expelled from Mexico earlier this week and made his initial court appearance on Thursday. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years with a maximum penalty of life or possibly the death penalty.  KTSM
  • CBP officers arrested a 22-year-old American man for smuggling 20.1 pounds of cocaine at the Ysleta Port of Entry on Wednesday morning — a drug-sniffing dog led them to packages hidden in his truck.  KVIA
  • Crime Stoppers of El Paso, Inc. distributes fugitives sought by the sheriff's office and police through its Most Wanted feature, and anyone with information should call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 915-566-8477.  KFOX14
  • On Wednesday morning, law enforcement at Ysleta Port of Entry arrested a 22-year-old American man after a drug-sniffing dog detected 20.1 pounds of cocaine hidden in the dashboard of his Dodge Ram pickup truck.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A nondisclosure agreement from 2021 resurfaced at an El Paso ISD board meeting when Trustee Daniel Call claimed Board President Leah Hanany set up a special session with hidden motives and failed to disclose her ties to Marlin ISD—Hanany denied the claims and maintained her stance on confidentiality as the board continues to review Superintendent Sayavedra's status.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday that Attorney General Ken Paxton can resume his investigation of the migrant shelter network at Annunciation House—saying the lower court made errors when it blocked his document request. The case now goes back to the district court for further review.  KFOX14
  • The Texas House and Senate passed a state budget that adds $65M to El Paso’s cancer center, raising its total state funding to $130M, and allocates $10M for design work on a downtown deck plaza over I-10, while Gov. Greg Abbott must sign the bill for the funds to be released. The cancer center, a joint project of University Medical Center and Texas Tech Health, is set to break ground this fall at Rosa Avenue + Rick Francis Street and private donors have pledged $25M for the deck project even as its overall cost may be higher.  KVIA
