BUSINESS NEWS

  • Technology company Wiwynn Corp. announced a $152 million investment in Socorro that will create 514 high-paying jobs at its new manufacturing and testing facility at the Socorro Logistics Center—city leaders say the move boosts the region’s role in global tech.  KTSM

CRIME NEWS

  • A 35-year-old man, Salvador Valdiviezo, fired at officers during a domestic violence call at a home on Passo Via Street in Upper Valley on Sunday, June 1, and died after officers returned fire—one female officer was injured and three investigations have been launched.  El Paso Times
  • After being extradited from Mexico, 31-year-old Jaime Renteria Fernandez appeared in court this morning in El Paso where he pleaded not guilty to murder, firearm possession, money laundering, and drug trafficking and was held in federal custody with no bond — his legal proceedings will move forward.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • EPISD Superintendent Diana Sayavedra will retire on June 15 and hold honorary emeritus status until January 2026 after signing a voluntary separation agreement approved by the board; EPISD named Martha Aguirre as interim superintendent, effective June 16—details on the agreement remain pending.  El Paso Matters
  • A new music education space has opened downtown at 801 S. Florence Street thanks to The Great Khalid Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso. The space is designed to foster creativity and quality learning for local youth and had a ribbon-cutting ceremony today — marking a step forward in community education.  KVIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The El Paso Zoo welcomed several spring births, including a penguin chick hatched on May 9 and a pronghorn fawn born on May 15, to support conservation for species in decline—visitors can see these new arrivals at the zoo.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Socorro ended its transit deal with the El Paso Transportation Authority so that ETA buses will no longer stop to pick up or drop off passengers starting July 1, and the city will offer a van service instead. Mayor Rudy Cruz Jr said the new service will run Monday to Thursday + exclude holidays and will help residents in need of a ride.  KFOX14
  • El Paso County officials, including Commissioner Iliana Holguin and Judge Ricardo Samaniego, are reviewing options after SB8 was sent to Gov. Abbott and may soon force local sheriffs to assist ICE under the 287(g) program. Local leaders worry that increasing legal training costs—needed for new immigration enforcement duties—could lower public trust and make residents hesitant to call the police.  KTSM

SPORTS NEWS

  • UTEP Athletics announced a contest for fans to submit jersey designs for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The winning design will be featured in a conference game during the 2025-26 season and earn its creator $1,250—submissions must meet NCAA and UTEP guidelines, are due by July 8, and finalists will be announced on August 5.  El Paso Times
